Canines rubbing? Singe on mink?
« on: February 03, 2003, 06:02:31 AM »
Who's seeing rubbing? When does this typicaly set in in the northern regions? How late into the season will the pelts retain value? I'd like to get a canine line back out, but am concerned that the pelts would be worth little at this point.

Secondary, was wondering if anyone has actualy seen singe on a mink this year. I happen to get a late one on the rat line last week, and still couldn't see any signs of singe, but then again never have. I've seen it on some late season otters, but never on my mink. FF&G says that "all the mink are singed", and I'm wondering where? I hold the fur up to the light and it looks as good as a Christmas mink would. A little help on this subject will be appreciated.

As far as singe goes trap untill you see the singe in yr area and also pretains to canines to as rubbing.  Every area and also the weather conditions  for the time  change things.  Go for it and watch your pelts conditions

I just started putting in a new line on a new ranch today.  My coyotes look great.  I've found that the pups of the year start to rub earlier than the old dogs and have routinely taken good pelts through March.  Anyhow, the cats are prime, as are the Badgers and Greys.  Go get em!

My buyer tried the "singed" and "rubbed" trick on me several times too early in the year. I held the mink up to the light and didn't see any curled ends, myself. Nor could he when I really pressed him on the issue. After discussion, and he never really came out and said it clearly, but evidently he had pretty much filled his orders and was backing off on purchases...the singed and rubbed issue was a good out for him without having to tell every Joe through the door that he was losing interest in purchases for the year, even though fur was still at its best in the area. Still a few of these guys out there that treat the trapper this way, I guess. Will have to find a new one next year, that's all. You would think after 15+ years of doing exclusive business with the guy that he would learn not to screw his "regulars" like this. The world needs a few more honest buyers, I guess. It's not like I just take his word on stuff blindly...I do know a thing or two about quality and what happens late in the seasons to certain species too.
Anyone know of any honest buyers left in my neck of the woods? (Southeast Nebraska)
