Need advice on a open-top deal
« on: January 12, 2005, 06:52:02 AM »
A local shop had a Traditions brand open top revolver in .38 sp.  It is built on a 1851 Navy frame.  It is in used, but essentially new condition for $339.  I don't know what these retail for so don't know if this is the right price.

Anyone have any advice on this one?  They also have one in .44 Colt.

I also posted this question on the CAS Board

Thanks!

:cb2: Sorry, I have never seen the Traditions model. However, I ordered a Cimarron Arms 1872 Open Top, Army grip, 7.5 " barrel, regular blued finish (they offer two other choices), .38 Spl., and it is going for $479. I've not seen a used one anywhere.

Sure be glad when it gets here!

The Opentops made by other than Uberti are on a Navy frame and the cylinder is smaller than the Uberti.  This is not a big problem if the cylinder is Navy diameter, but if they enlarged it, the bottom of the cylinder cutout is made too thin and the bolt is a real tough fit.

Uberti (for Cimarron) made the cylinder the proper size for the 1872, and lifted the center of the cylinder pin and the bore to match, as had Colt, so the frame and internal parts work properly.  They are wonderful guns...IMHO.  If you can save up and get the Cimarron.
