new barrel

i  have a 35 rem barrel  but i cant find aammo for it so i  am going to try to trade it or sell it fore a popular caliber around the same power and recoil with readily avaailible factory loads help is appriciated

What about the 30-30?  Ammo should be readily available (sounds like you aren't a reloader), and should perform similarly (should even stretch your range even more).

would the 270 win be in the ball park of the 35 how would the recoil be?

The 270 would be a fine choice if you have an Encore. That's not a Contender caliber due to the high pressure generated. The 30/30 would be your best bet for good ammunition availability with the Contender.

The 30-06 is also an Encore caliber with presure to high for the Contender.

Check out the available chamberings for a Contender here:

You'll need an Encore frame to handle the higher intensity chamberings like a 7-08, 308, 270, 30/06.

Cheaper Than Dirt, Cabelas as well as others carries the .35 Remington in their catalog so you could get some internet or mail order.  I don't have any trouble finding it locally but it is popular here in the midwest and available at many Walmarts and bigger sporting goods stores.    
 
It is hard to get much more power in the Contender frame barrels and I gather that you are looking for more power and factory ammo you can get locally.  For that you may be better off with an Encore pistol in something like .308.  There is a much higher limit with the Encore and you'll have plenty of caliber choices.

About the max long range performance you're going to get is from one of the  wildcats long the lines of .309 JDJ (SSK Industries), .30 BRM (EA Brown), .308 B e l l m, etc.  You're going to gain a decent amount of velocity over the .30-30, but if you want significantly more then you will have to go over to the Encore platform.  There's no reason to push a Contender beyond its limits and risk life and limb when there are better tools for the job.
