What kind of target do you use??
« on: January 12, 2005, 09:05:35 AM »
Alright...I've been talking about trying bowhunting for a while, and I finally dove in.  I've bought my bow.  Got my arrows.  Settled on a release.  I made my decisions on these things by lurking around here and other venues with the guys in the know.  I don't hear much about targets though.  Like everything else archery, I've found there are a million types of targets.  Different construction, sizes, shapes, prices.  I am befuddled.  What do you guys use and why?  I want to become proficient through practice, and would rather spend a little more for a quality target that will withstand as much practice as possible.  Thanks in advance guys, I don't post often but I'm always lurking and ya'll have helped me more with the archery equipment than you know!
Good hunting!

I use a BLOCK and can't complain. It's not as easy as they make it look on TV with field points, unless you shoot a couple times into the area then you can pull it out fairly easy. I find my practice broadheads, I can pull out fairly easy, just that it eats at the foam construction a lil bit. I picked up the Portable model for $60. Mebe in the future I'll get the GlenDel Buck, also made by BLOCK but it's a 3-D target with a layered insert resembling the original BLOCK target. But that's my :money:. Good luck!  :D

I have one of the larger Blocks.  Agreed it is not as easy to pull the arrows as on TV.  And, I have shot to the point in one year that the arrows burry to the fletchings.

It is actually in the wood shop today as I am making a frame to compress the lawers more.

Pass-through
« Reply #4 on: January 12, 2005, 04:43:25 PM »
It depends on how one defines a pass-through.  Nothing has gone completely through the Block. But once the arrows start having the fletching ripped off and ruined because they pmetrated too deep, then the effectiveness of the target is not that good.

Now I will clarify one thing.  On an average summer day I may shoot 100-200 shoots a day.  Slowing down a bit but the poundage is up to 72-74 pounds.

The fix:

1.  I took the target to the wood shop today.  I am a vocational education teacher.  I cut the metal bands and removed the plastic shrink wrap.

2.  I pried the bottom section and top section off of the middle and then placed the middle on the bottom, top in the middle and the bottom on top.

3.  I cut 2 pieces of 3/4" plywood the size of the top.

4.  I then cut 4 - 2"x 8" boards that hang 2" over each side.  Drilled 2 - 9/16" diameter holes the width of the Block in each 2" x 8".

5.  I then assembled the 2" x 8"s, on the top and bottom, then the plywood, and the block in the middleand the other 2 2" x 8"s on the bottom.

6.  I then took 4 pieces of threaded rod and compressed the block.

Now as it wears I only have to tighten the threaded rods equaly to make the Block tighter.

P.S. If I did not describe the process well enough I might be able to make a drawing.

The Block is the best in my opinion.  We have 2 that have seen thousands of shots with very little wear showing.  We put stickers on different spots so we are not pounding one spot repeatedly.  Now this is with target tips not broadheads.  Nothing holds up to broadheads.

According to BLOCK, it can take all 3 types of tips. I have yet to try broadheads, but I've used them with the practice blades. It tends to eat a lil at the foam, but results are different w/ broadheads (or simulated ones) as opposed to field points.  :D

The block does stop broadheads very well and they pull out easily.  But Nothing holds up to steady broadhead use.

Daveinthebush has the right idea. I have built simuilar targets. you can tighten the threaded rod to somewhat adjust arrow penetration and ease of removal. Card board is pretty much free. you can restack it has you blowout the sweet spot. You can make them any size you want. I am currently making a large one to shoot 50 yards or more. I shoot pretty good at 40 and want to mave out for fun. I wount shoot a deer at these ranges but long distance is just plain fun.' These targets are great , just not portable/

I have a yellow jacket target and I tell yuh I wish I never bought it. Unless you lube the arrow with siliconeyour not getting it out to easily. I wish I had just spent the extra and gotten the block or the black hole.  The yellow jacket target, broadheads are kind a pain to get out but feild point you better get a good grip lol or else find a way to hitch them up to your truck.

The Block for me too.  Got an old Delta deer target for  hunting practice that I keep refilling the holes up.  Looks funny but it works great.  Lawdog

I WORK IN A EQUIPMENT FABRACATION PLANT AND THEY USE THE EXPANDABLE FOAM INSULATION. YOU JUST GET A CARDBOARD BOX AND FILL IT UP. WORKS GREAT.

The block is the way to go. I have 3 of them. I have the small travel one, an outfitter and one of the big range blocks. It stands about 4 foot tall.  I also have a Glen dale buck and several other targets. I use the Blocks the most though.  :D

My uncle gave me a bunch of plastic burlap bags. Like grass seed comes in.
What I did was stuff one of these full of old sheets, clothes & blankets & such & sewed it up nice & tight with some twine. Had it way over a year now & all I have to do is drop the whole thing in a new bag if it starts falling apart. Cant shoot it with broadheads tho, well you can but its no fun getting them out. It stops them but they get tangled. Best free target I ever got.

The block is the way to go.  But keep the brodheads out of it.  It will handle them but they really chew it up and will greatly reduce its life span.  I don't know if you could actually kill it by just shooting field tips.  I have shot mine with about a dozen shots with the blades and it really shows.  No more are going into it.

I use some heavy bags with a pic of the vitals on them. I can't remember the name of them. I also have a delta buck target I use. Both seem to work good with field tips. I also shoot at my friends block target and you would not go wrong with it.
