Reduced loads for .223 Data?
« on: January 12, 2005, 04:07:28 PM »
I am looking to load some .223 down to hornet or even 22mag velocitys. My 3 manuals don't get that slow. If I figure this right I should be able to start with 22hornet loads and work up. anybody have favorite loads in the 2000 to 2400 fps area. I think this would reduce the report and still be 150yds accurate for coyotes and small preditors. Would you use hornet bullets or still use the 223 class.   I am wanting to load 40 and 45 gr bullets for this purpose. What's your favorite/combination.

4gr of Blue dot  will give you about 1250 with a 40gr bullet..

Search www.accuratereloading.com with the key words Blue Dot a fella there has done alot of work, 6-10 different cartridges tested. the 223 data concurs with the data posted on calhoon's site.

I am GOING TO trying it in my 243 and my 338 (2200 fps practice rounds that cost 24$ for 50 :-D ) and a buddys 223.

Try about 12.0 gr Blue Dot with any bullet less than 60 gr.  I haven't gotten sterling accuracy with the loads out of a Handi, but I have been assured they produce 1" or less at 100 yards out of bolt actions.

Here's a thread I posted on another site that deals with reduced loads to the extent of 4 pages.

I normally get 1 1/2" or less groups with these loads at 100 yards out of my synthetic .223 with standard barrel.

I forgot to mention, "Seafire" is the fellow to search for on the site that is posted above.  He's the one that got me started using reduced loads with Blue Dot.

Paul

The one think I have not been able to confirm was which blue dot, Alliant or herco. I thought I had read Alliant but I have not found that thread again.

Hodgdon list H4895 with the 223, anywhere they list a load with H4895 they say it can be reduced to 60% loading.  The 223 is not listed in the youth loading so they dont tell you what velocities to expect from the 60% load level.

It's been a while since I have been there and it looks like they have gone to a new forum format that doesn't remember the old logins.  Seafire is short for some WWII airplane designation (seafire/ B17G) that would actually be the member name to search for.  His email address is listed on the personal info page.

It doesn't matter if it's Hercules Blue Dot or Alliant Blue Dot.  They're both the same thing.
