Anyone Here A Musician?
« on: January 12, 2005, 06:10:13 PM »
I recently replaced a Saxophone that was stolen from my truck about 15 years ago, so I've been practicing every day again.  I'm wondering if anyone else here plays an intrument besides Tubbythetubba?  If so, what do you play, and what genre of music do you enjoy?

I have been playing guitar for many years and writing original music, a little blues, country, Island music etc....just depends on what mood I am in when I am writing.  Haven't written much in the last year though, just one little song for my sweetie.

My favorite electric ia a Gibson SG with extended neck w/ vintage Fender Deluxe Reverb Amp (tubes).  My accoustic is an old Crown..I had an internal pick-up installed when I bought it about 25 years ago.  Very pretty guitar, no plywood, I have been told that it is very similar to a Martin neck.  I have always wanted a LesPaul..but have never pulled it off.

Been Playing guitar since 1968. Been through a bunch of Fender guitars some American some Jap and one Mexican. Had a few other Jap guitars and one Gibson SG. I guess I did not care for the SG neck or sound compared to Fender but still I wish I had it back now. Same with my Fender Super Reverb amp. Got rid of it to "Modernize" to Several Peaveys not saying anything wrong with them they are fine amps but do not have that sound a Fender Tube amp does eh Robert? Now I have a Peavey Made in the USA Reactor Guitar which was Peavey's copy of a Telecaster and it plays and sounds as good as any Fender guitar I have played. Nice guitar too bad they quit making them. I am glad I got this one when I could. Amp is a Crate and I use a Digitech RP 80 Modeling pedal. Nice pedal and it kinda gives me a Fender sound out of the Crate amp until I can find a other vintage Tube amp. I am looking but until I find a deal unwilling to pay the prices music stores want but I know I will find a deal out there somewhere. Music played is 50's through 70's Rock and Roll and Country.  Add a few other types and I suppose you could call it variety as that is what they call bar bands in this area that play a combination of rock and country with a few polka's and waltzes thrown in for all age crowds for bar and wedding jobs.
Said I never had much use for one, never said I didn't know how to use it.

What do you think of the sound of Stratocasters?  Everyone I've ever heard who could actually play one, REALLY sounded great!  I don't play the guitar, it's above my IQ.  *smiles*

Strats are nice sounding guitars I had several and played them for years. They are great if you like that bright fender sound. I found out in my old age I want to get back to basics. Telecasters's to me have a nicer sound for country and blues and works fine for rock. This is the second Tele I have had and I seem to like them better though I played strats for over 15 years. Though my Current guitar is a Peavey (tele copy) it plays and sounds as good as any other Tele I have played and looks just like a Fender except the headstock is a bit different. Still has that basic fender headstock look though.

HAH!  Well, that's how I like my sax to sound also - bright, so I guess that explains it huh?  It sure is fun to start playing again after such a long hiatus - 15 years.  I've discovered that it definitely isn't like riding a bicycle either.  I just pulled out all my old beginner's stuff and re-layed the foundation.  I did my first unpaid (unless you count drinks and food) gig, since my "come back" on New Year's Eve.  I fumbled a couple notes, but almost nobody noticed....hehehehe

Now if I can get my daughter that drum set, we'll have enough muscian's in the house for a jazz band.

I play an old beater LH Yamaha acoustic.

It ain't the top of the line, but neither is my playing or my voice!

I usually only chord to Hank Sr., Johnny Cash, etc., with a couple of Brooks & Dunn or John Anderson tunes as well ..... Yep, just country.

Nothing wrong with just country. I am playing a gig for a buddy  first part of Feb who is more into country than any rock and roll so I suppose I will be picking country most of the afternoon which is fine with me be a good change for a while though I suspect a few rocking tunes may be added for a change of pace   :)  Jim

I don't remember which one I got first, a guitar or my BB gun.  It seems that a lot of folks who are interested in one are also interested in the other.  I am what I call a "budget collector" of guitars and basses.  I have several of both and most of them are my favorites.  Actually, I have only owned one guitar that is no longer in my collection, and that was my first acoustic.  My very first guitar was a gift from my Grandmother in 1954; since there was only money enough for 6 months of lessons it took many years before I learned to play much.  My Dad was the only musician in the family, but he was already gone by then and none of my friends played guitar.  The music programs at school in those days did not include guitar; I did play clarinet in high school though.

Recently I am collecting Ibanez lawsuit guitar and bass models and Peavey guitars.  Nothing very high dollar in my stuff, but all of them are good players.  Been playing bass mostly for the last several years; play at church pretty regularly with an occasional other job here and there.  I love playing the bass, only problem is that the equipment seems to be getting heavier as I get older.  By comparison, guns are a lot lighter.

I play the guitar, harmonica and jews harp, plus play around on the fiddle. I started the harmonica and jews harp in '60, the guitar in '64. Played bass guitar in a rock and roll band for a couple of years in the mid 60's. I haven't progessed much on the guitar, still sit around with it and finger pick 60's type folk music. On the harmonica I can play the old hill billy style where you chord at the same time your playing the melody or I can cross harp and play blues type stuff. I am very good at running people off by trying to play the fiddle.

I contemplated how to come in to this thread and now have a injured -stiched finger.I started in 42 with a Bugle and bugled up till this day.I then went to a Coronet in the forties and then Trumpet, was in the 46 Rose Parade and then to Dance and Swing bands and by the time I was 16 was force to join the union[Petrilo Union in LA],I just wanted to play I did not care about the pay,but once in I played under David Rose and did the Horse whinny on Sliegh ride, his Masked waltz record, played with the LA Philamonic under Wahlenstien, played with different  bands and was a regular on weekends with the Ken Carpenter band and the Rivera Country club, took music in college and the transfered to USC and got drafted, never played professionaly again but stilll bugle .

I have had an old Gibson for many years w/ a nice clean Peavy TNT..I got for 50 bucks and just had to re-cone it.  Sounds wonderful, except that I tend to play lead guitar on it instead of Bass licks.  Old Guitar habits are hard to die.  Sarge, I will think of you when I play  'When the Roll is Called up Yonder" on my A harp.  That song really lends itself to toungeblocking.  I don't play the harp much anymore, but when I do, I always think about getting a monkey to go along with the 'Organ Grinder' music.  I do a pretty good blues in E on the A harp too.  I love E blues.

If you are collecting Ibanez lawsuit guitars cheaply then you must be finding them from folks who do not know what they are worth as they are worth a few bucks these days and very collectable.

Hey Dali, good to see you. I see that you're still pushing the 39A!

Robert,
I agree, a monkey would certainly go along with that type of harp playing. I also play blues with an A harp crossing to E.   I also have 3 or 4 chromatic harps that I play which expands the realm of music, but different.

You are correct; I started collecting the lawsuit models about 6 or 7 years ago.  They were not in much demand then and I picked up a Strat copy in great shape for $125 wo/case.  Case cost another $20.  So far I have copies of a Les Paul, a Precision Bass, a Gibson Hummingbird, and the Strat.  Also have Ibanez guitars that are not copies; one is a Blazer, can't remember what the other one is.  Anyway, I think they are great instruments and some others must think so too; the price keeps going up.
