Encore Contender stock differences ?
« on: January 13, 2005, 04:42:22 AM »
I am new to Encore rifle/pistols and wish to know the difference between butt stocks and the bolts that hold them, or, are they the same?

I'm not sure if you mean between an Encore rifle and pistol or a Contender and Encore.  If it's the first case, they are the same.  Any Encore (or Contender) can be converted to a rifle by removing the grip and installing the buttstock and vise versa.  Encores and Contenders are different sized frames and not interchangeable.

if the frames are difference size, then the stocks for either rifle or pistol will be different, as will the bolt?

Encore Contender stock differences ?

The stock bolt on my Encore rifle is a 1/4"-20 hex head cap screw 2" long.  My Contender handgun grip screw is also 1/4"-20 but is 2-1/2" long.   I don't have it handy but I think the synthetic stock I have for the Contender is 1-1/2" long.  Anyway they are all 1/4"-20 hex screws.

My problem is I have purchased a walnut Encore butt stock.

And the bolt is 1.5 inches, but is not long enough to clear wood, much less attach lock washer, washer, and nut. I am assuming it must be a Encore stock as the action fits perfectly. I called T/C and they are sending me bolt for Encore, but if it is only 1.5 inches, then what could be the problem? Is this stock really for a contender, meaning they fit both receivers?

Thanks!

The opening that accepts the frame is about 1/8" wider on the Encore so if the stock is for a Contender, it won't fit. The cut out for the trigger stop screw is deeper and wider for the Encore too. An Encore stock will slide on to a Contender frame but the poor fit will be obvious. They have enough differences that a mistake in identity is hard to come upon.

I suspect it is just the wrong length.  If you are in a hurry, you can get these at any decent hardware store and even Home Depot.   I have an assortment of lengths I keep on hand for other projects along with #10 and #8 size.  I've replace most of the one on my forends with the hex head.

On what is going on. And I thank all of you for your help.

"I forgot to tell you. If you have a TC Encore stainless frame, the screw will be a little short.

The blue model TC Encore frame comes with the longer
screw. I don't know why TC does that. Seems like they did not think that
a customer would want a stainless frame on walnut. We discovered this last year.

When I sold my brother stainless frame with synthetic stocks, then he wanted walnut stocks. He called a day later with the same problem. He went down to the bolt shop with his TC Encore ss screw and bought a couple of identical screws that were longer. They worked.

The Walnut Stocks will fit, because they came with Encore blue frames from TC. The screw length is the problem. Seems to me that TC should let everyone know about this minor problem. They should make one screw for both synthetic and walnut stocks.

My later comments: It appears the bolt for the walnut needds to be longer because the walnut needs greater thickness for strength. Will advise Jennifer at T/C of the difficulty that rises on occasion because of this.

The three Encore frames and three Contender frames I have did not come with stock or grip screws.  The screws came with the grips/stocks that I bought for them.  The screw is associated with the stock, not the frame.

Thanks. I have obtained stainless 1/4 x 20 hex bolts and washers (2) and lock washer for this stock locally, for about a "buck 30." Solved the problem, but I will bet lots of shooters will be having similar problem, unless T/C clarifies it.

Appreciate the input, and Thanks!
