Winter Range Experience
« on: February 03, 2003, 09:51:12 AM »
Heyya!!!

WOW!  Just got back from Winter Range.  It was a truly great experience.  The Ben Avery Range facility is awesome.  WR had over 100 vendors present.  Lets see, how did I spend my retirement money???
1.  Action job on my marlin cowboy
2.  Just had to have my alias engraved on the back straps of my pistols
3.  Just had to have two more pairs of pants.
4.  Just had to buy two more shirts
5.  Just had to buy a set of spurs and straps
6.  Just had to have spring kits put in my blackhawks
7.  Just had to buy that new shotgun belt from kirkpatrick
8.  Just had to buy that really cool timer
9.  Just had to buy two sets of herret gunfighter grips for the blackhawks
10. Just had to buy that new hatband
11. Just had to buy that new stampede string
12. Just had to buy that rifle cartridge slide for my 38-55.
13. Just had to buy that pair of sleeve garters

Feels like I am forgetting somethin....   oh well, I am sure my lovely bride will bring it to my attention when the credit card statement arrives.

There were 12 stages, each with 10 pistol, 10 rifle, and 4 shotgun.  The shotgun targets were knock downs.  The stages were creative, but not designed to rip your brain outta your head and have you commit a procedural.  The safety was 150%, the food vendors were plentiful, and everyone was as nice as you could imagine.

I also attended the Evil Roy shooting school on Monday and Tuesday.  Very comprehensive and worthwhile training.

I shoot in mens modern class.  I was 22nd out of 32 shooters in that class, and 260th overall out of 534 shooters.   I had four misses for 12 stages.  All of them were the last pistol round, at the very end of the stage.   Seeing this was my third match I am very pleased with the results.  Once I get some of the techniques down that I learned at Evil Roys perhaps I will be shooting a bit quicker and hopefully cut down on the maggies drawers.

If you have the chance to attend this match next year, you should.  The hosting club puts on one heck of a fine week long program.

Heyya Big

A fella back near you.  Larry Crow.  I was very pleased with the results.  The work they did reduced the energy to throw the lever by about 50%.  As a result, the front sight stays on target while I cycle the lever resulting in faster successessive shots.

I also had them gring the wings off'n the rear buckhorn sight, leavin just a very shallow "V".  The wings were actually blocking the view of the next target on a sweep.  I see the next target now much quicker.  It did not affect the accuracy at all as I did not miss a single rifle target the entire match.

I am thinkin of sendin Larry my marlin for his short stroke action work.  He seemed to be a very nice man, and was willing to stop what he was doing to explain things to me about what the work entails.

Cheyenne, this was the best time I have ever had shooting in a competition.  Now I am lookin forward to End of Trail.

You got it done by one of the best in the business.

I've had the opportunity to shoot one of Larry's short stroke Marlins and they are amazing! Makes a quicker shooter out of even a slow hand like me.

I just can't say enough good things about Mr. Crow and his work. He's an artist, as well as a real straight shooter, in every sense of the word.

I am glad you had a good time. I had LOADS of fun !!!!!!!!!!!
It is one of my favorite shoots. I plan on returning next year.
That range is the home range of ACSA we shoot there most every month. In the summer we go north to escape the heat.
I enjoy the Ben Avery Range.

Pete :-)
