4" 500 S&W
« on: January 14, 2005, 06:19:08 AM »
Well, anybody own one yet?  There is one at my local shop and it gets harder to walk by it every time I go there.  Right now they have a no charge 9 month layaway going so justifying the cost just got a lot easier. .  If you have one what do you think and do you have any regrets.

Do a search and you will find a ton of posts on the 500S/W.  I have yet to read anything bad on them.  I really like the 4" a lot more then the 8 1/2".  The balance is a lot better with the 4".  Recoil is really not that bad unless you are shooting a bunch of heavy 440 grain bullets.

I agree, the 4" is much better than the 8 3/8" for balance.  They have three of them there, a used 8 3/8", a new 8 3/8" and the 4".  The used 8 3/8" is very reasonable in price but there is no way I could shoot that gun well without a rest.

I have both.  The 8 1/2 is better for mounting a scope.  The 4 inch I like iron sighted.  The 500 is a very accurate caliber.   Reloading is a must
as ammo is very expensive. Recoil is like a 45/70 more of a push straight back then wrist torque.

I have a 4 inch S&W500 and I think it is great. I had the 8 3/8 but the 4 inch is a better gun in my opinion.  :D

Critter,
No regrets here.  I think the 500 is one of S&W's better ones.  The actions are smooth, triggers are crisp and they are accurate.
One thing to keep in mind is that they are expensive to feed.  If I didn't handload I probably wouldn't be owning one.
Best,

The 500MAG is one gun that is a must to reload for. I have been shooting a 500MAG for over a year now and between the three 500MAGs I have been shooting, I have well over 1500 rounds fired. I got my reloading supplies for the 500MAG before I got my first gun. I started with the BFR in 500MAG and added a 8 3/8 inch S&W500 and now have added a 4 inch S&W500.  :D

I come from the ideology that there is not such thing as too much gun. :)

Thanks for the info fellers.  I am a reloader so ammo cost can be kept to a minimum.

8) On the S & W website they refer to the new .500 as a 4", but in another spot it says "3" barrel and 1" muzzle brake".  The brake is removable.  Does anyone know if the states that care about such things consider this a 3", or 4" barrel ? :?

sawfish,
Actually, S&W lists it as a 4" barrel.  Although only 3" is rifled, the fixed portions of the barrel both above and below the compensator opening is 4".  Smith does make reference to 3" and 1" compensated.

O.K. fellas, I have a 629, I had to have it worked on because of flame cutting, extreme should have said.  and the cylinder face had to be squared up as well. My question is this, how is the 500 holding up to the flame cutting? any other similar issues? Halfbreed

Don, what do you mean c-4, what's that? I know so many people who used  it to cook on, or burn it to keep warm. Won't ever say I did anything like that,     no sir won't say it, and you can't make me. LOL

Thanks guys, Lost him a little over 4 years ago to cancer.

Halfbreed, Those C rations don`t taste much better cooked with C-4 do they?  Mine never did anyway.

Don, helps to scorch the rations just a little bit, at least that way you can recognize "some" flavor.
