I broke the base pin on my Ruger yesterday. The retaining lock screw was in the unlock position when I seated the first bullet. This allowed the base pin to pull out of the cylinder and bend at the cut for the retaining lock. Finally after getting the bent base pin out I tried to straighten it. Snap! I called Ruger and ordered a new one today. A $20 goof up.

Don't feel too bad, I did the same thing with my Rogers & Spencer, but that one was soft enough that I could bend it back.   It is something that I carefully check each time I go to load now.

I had a bent pin on a 58 Remington Uberti.  Bought it used at a Gun Show.  I straightened it no problem by chucking it in a lathe to see the runout and tweak it straight.  The Ruger parts are much harder, and seem from the message here to be more likely to break than bend back to straight.  Ruger parts are also available from Brownell's and Gun Parts Inc.
