22mag Ammo Suggestions Wanted
« on: January 14, 2005, 03:06:44 PM »
Without getting into a debate about the 22 mag not being enough gun for Coyotes, I would like suggestions from people who have used this round on them successfully, and which ammo has worked the best for them.

In Michigan to hunt coyotes at night with a light you must use either a rimfire or a shotgun with loads other than buckshot.  I will be using a Ruger 77/22 Mag for night hunting only along with a 12 gauge shotgun depending on the setup.  Daylight hours I will be using a Contender Carbine in .223 rem.

I also see that Mueller is a new sponsor to this board and plan on mounting one of their 3-9x40 lighted scopes on my new Ruger.  Have any of you guys used these scopes for night hunting yet?

When I first started out hunting coyote (along time ago) it was with the 22 mag. I have used it on a couple sense that time only because I was out hunting foxs and I had a coyote respond. remember if you put that bullet in to the right spot it will do the job.
you asked which make off 22 mag ammo is the best? my best answer to that is the one that you get the best accuracy with. In mine I get the best accuracy with Winchester ammo.

just my 2cents

I dont like misfires and therefore use CCI. Used to be not so uncommon using Win and was turrible for what they cost.
In all fairness, I have not tryed the Win for at least 10yr's but probably wont give them another chance unless I hear something really good here.

Camel23,

Although I still don’t recommend using one the following are what I would use if I could use nothing else,

1.]  CCI Maxi-Mag Ammunition 22 WMR 50 Grain Gold Dot Jacketed Hollow Point

2.]  Remington Premier Ammunition 22 WMR 33 Grain V-Max Boat Tail - My #2 choice

3.]  Outland Sales .22 WMR Custom Load 35 gr Hornady V-Max
(Go to http://www.outlandsales.com/vmax.html to see these hot little numbers - over 2,000 fps.)  My favorite!

The last two are giving me excellent accuracy and performance in my Ruger 77/22M.  I still wouldn’t use them over 50 or so yards on called in coyotes.

glanceblamm,

Haven't had a misfire using any of these three.  Lawdog

 Those OSSI customs are too rich for my blood. $21.50 for plain and 23.75 for moly coated. Thats for a box of 50!! They can keep em.. I have the best groups out of my winchester lever 9422m shooting the Win supreme 34grain. Ain't had a misfire yet with any ammo in it. I have yet to try the Rem premier 33 grainers. If ya got a buddy with a 22mag, go together and buy a bunch of different kinds and split them. I got a guy with a marlin bolt and his seems to like the Rem Premiers.

My Ruger 10/22 magnum has a definite preference for the Federal Premium 30 grainers.  This load also has the fastest MV of all of them.  It is listed at 2200fps but I have not chronographed them.

I started shooting the .22 Mag about 1960 right after it came out. Back then Mossberg and Marlin were about the only two options in guns. I had the Marlin and my cousin the Mossberg. Both were finely accurate with the ammo available in spite of the magazine writer claims to the contrary.

I've found that either the original 40 grain HP loads from CCI or Winchester will usually give MOA or darn close it accuracy in most any rifle or TC barrel I've owned since. One will always outshine the other but it varies as to which the barrel will like. Those are the only two loads I even bother with anymore.

In nearly 45 years of use of this round I've never ever had a single failure to fire with either CCI or Winchester ammo. On coyote size critters it seems to take them out well with either head shots or heart/lung shots. Miss those zones and you're not likely to find the critter even tho it likely will be dead.

I don't concider a 22LR or a 22mag the best round for coyotes, but in some areas, thats all you can use, rimfire only, be sure to take a head shot or heart/lungs or like Graybeard said they will be in the next state before he dies, if he does. I have used even a 22lr using the new CCI Raptors GDHP bullet, they state 33% more energy, I use a bait sight, get them in close and head shot them. I prefer a scoped 243win using 100gr hornady interlocks FB/BT...terns them inside out, not good if you want to save the pelts;) Aim small hit small. RAMbo.

Thanks for the input everyone.  I picked up a box of both the Winchester and CCI 40 gr HPs and I'll see what the gun prefers.  Haven't been able to locate any Remington Premiers yet.  The ones from outland sales at $21.50/box   plus $8.00 S&H   are a little out of my range but I'm sure other people like them.

Go to Midway at http://www.midwayusa.com/rewriteaproduct/215355 to order them.  That is where I get mine.  Very accurate.  Read the reviews shooters have posted about them at Midway.  Lawdog
