Hey guys, I have been reading a lot of discusions on bullet drop at long range and after doing some serious thinking(very dangerous) I wonder what would happen if you put dimples on a bullet like on a golf ball. The dimples on the ball are supposed to give it lift and make it fly farther so the principal would be the same on a bullet because of the spin applied by the rifling. :-D  :)  :-D  :)  :D

Well wouldn't the rifling destroy all the dimples.     :(

Seems like adding dimples would increase drag, result in an accelerated loss of velocity and energy, and create an opportunity for fragmentation before actually hitting a target, depending on the initial muzzle velocity.

Be kind of like wrapping a hockey puck with sand paper.
They may talk of a "New Order" in the  world, but what they have in mind is only a revival of the oldest and worst tyranny.   No liberty, no religion, no hope.   It is an unholy alliance of power and pelf to dominate and to enslave the human race.

It might work with round balls at subsonic speeds, as in a smoothbore muzzleloader.  "Hevi-shot" (sp?) shotgun load pellets seem to gain advantage with their irregular shape.

The dimple theory could easily be tested.  Take a bullet and put some dimples on it. Use a round punch, or whatever shape you like. Reload a few of each type, size, depth etc. Then use some standard bullets and shoot them at a certain elevation, at a distant target. Then try the same distance with the dimpled bullets, at the same powder load and elevation. If they are faster, or hold their speed better, they should be higher on the target.

Gotta agree with Fweidner on this. I'd never heard that about the dimples on golf balls either, seems like it would increase the drag. POWDERMAN.  :D  :D  :D  :D
