New Roller!
« on: January 14, 2005, 04:08:26 PM »
I'm a happy guy! I think I can die and go to heaven now! A friend called me tonight, when I got home from work, and said I needed to get to a gun shop up north as fast as I could! Said there was an original 1870's Remington Rolling Block Sporting Rifle for sale, and that it had just come in on consignment!
I rushed to the shop, and found a nice original RB, with 32" extra heavy, full octagon barrel, chambered in .44 Sharps Bottleneck (.44-77) the bore is fantastic, with lots of rifling, and shiny throughot, except for a small amount of dark area near the chamber. The wood is great, and the sights are original!  It also has a single set trigger! All unmessed with, and just a nice old gun! After a little bartering, and some friendly discussion, the shop owner came down $400 on a price that I would have been happy to have paid regardless!
I've wanted a RB like this for so long I can't even remember! I'm really blessed to have good friends looking out for me, (although my wife might disagree)! Now I need to start looking for dies, brass, bullets, working up loads, etc.... Yahoo!

Sounds like a great find Marlinman, you wouldn't fine anything like that at that price here in N.C. Seems like every thing goes for top dollar around here. I hope I can get the one I found in a pawn shop $200 and the only thing that is any good is the reciever. I'll know in a couple of weeks if i'm going to be able to buy it.

JCP, You may have read too much into my post. He came down $400 on the price, not down to $400. Don't want to reveal what I did pay, but it was a lot more than $400!
I've been looking for a #1 sporting rifle, for many years, and they just aren't out there at any price. Lots of military guns, and smaller framed guns, but the Buffalo, or Black Hills models were what I was looking for! The .44 Sharps falls into the Black Hills model range. The 32" barrel is larger in diameter than the octagon top receiver.
Flayderman's puts the total production of #1 Sporters at less than 10,000. I'd guess of that number, very few are still around, because they sure don't show up much, and when they do, they're either rusty relics, or swapped, restored parts guns.

Yea, read it wrong, got it now. I'm really glad you found what you were looking for, for so many years.
