C130E has it right on.  The MAX distance anyone should shoot with slugs is the distance where you can reilably put all your shots into about 6" (the affore mentioned vital area size on a deer.)  What this means is that normally you will be the limiting factor and not the slug because it will have plenty of power and momentum out to almost 200 yards and beyond.  But since there aint a whole lotta hunters out there that can put all their slugs into 6" at 100 yards then you the shooter are what determines the max range.

P.S. In my case I shoot at no more than 100 yards using Winchester 2 3/4" BRI slugs in a rifled 870.  The reason I limit myself to 100 yards is thats the farthest I have to shoot at the range.   Ive decided to adopt a policy of not shooting any farther than Ive shot at the range since I can never guarentee who I will shoot past said distance, even if Im doing 3" at 100 yards.  Since I cant be positive Ill let a deer walk.

I consider 150 yards to be my max with my Rem 1100 with Hastings barrel and Win. BRI sabots because of the trajectory. The gun is probably accurate well beyound that, but I don't like holding over a deer's back.
My ancient smoothbore Ithaca Deerslayer, on the other hand has about a 75 yard max range. So my experiance is pretty similar to what C130E has stated.
