New .460 S&W coming ...
« on: January 16, 2005, 01:15:23 AM »
Have any of you heard anything about the new .460 caliber that S&W is coming out with? I was at the gun shop this past Thursday evening when the owner showed me a display from S&W with the new .460 round loaded with a 200 gr Barnes FN that will have 2300 fps velocity. If I hadn't seen the display they sent him with an actual round, I wouldn't have believed him even though he is not the joking type.

Since I am a .45 lc fan, he said their new revolver will fire the .460, the .454, and the .45 lc. He had no pictures of the revolver but only info on the ammo. The round looked awesome. Oh ... that wasn't a misprint on that 2300 fps.

Wonder what the platform for the round will be? It would have to be something larger than the "N" frame. Compensated of course. Otherwise a 200gr projectile at 2300fps would come back at you right smart!

There was a long running thread on the Handgun Hunting forum here about the new round.  Not too many people there really care.  Just more UltraSuperMagnumitis being peddeled by the gun manufacturers.  Its going to be on the X-frame.  The folks on the Handgun hunting forum picked out the biggest bug in the bonnet......they are doing it all wrong.  They are going for a lighter bullet for caliber.  At least you can still fire the ole trust standbys in the .45 Colt and .454.

Look, if it'll fire a 454 Casull cartridge then its a 454 Casull on an X frame, I don't give a fly'n rat's pahtoot what they call it!!  The point is, what for?  They already have the 500.  Well, for those of us already set up to reload the 454 it might be worth a look, 'specially if we'd like a 4" big bore (and who don't?!).

At this point I would say it`s like introduceing a new .22 cal. varmint round. The .454 was enough better than the old .44 mag or the .45 Colt that it made sence. Then the .480, which really has nothing more than the .454, but bost a larger diameter bullet and less recoil. Then comes the .500 S&W which really puts it on all of them big time. I think that the timeing of the .460 is just to late. There are those of us who just have to have the biggest handgun we can get, but we`ve all got .500`s now, and there are very few others that would consider such a large bore handgun. I really do`nt think we`ll see it on the market, but if they do bring it out it will not be on the market for more than 2 years. The old 5mm Rem. mag. made alot more sence than this one does, and we all know what happened to it.

Catfish, people said the same thing about the 454 casull when it came out, them the 500 MAG.  I know that both will be around for a long time. People just want choices. Look at the rifle calibers .17 to 600 nitro and everything in between. Just look at 30-06, 300 win mag, 300 h&h mag, 300 weatherby mag 338 win mag and the list just goes on. Crazy isn't it.  :D

Redhawk,
When the .454 came out the .44 mag. was the largest handgun in commerical production, when the .500 came out it was the largest handgun in commerical production. This one is not the biggest and baddest so why chose it. With all of the other rounds now doing about the same thing it will do why chose it???? I don`t think that there is enough big bore shooters out there to keep all of these different rounds in production, after all there aren`t that many people that can stand to shoot any of the new big bores.

Catfish, my only guess is, someone that wants a little more that the 454 and less than the 500 MAG. Also the option of shooting the S&W460, 454 and 45LC. It is just the nature of the beast.  :D  Some may think it is crazy but other like the idea. I just go with the flow, I don't have to buy it but someone will.

Catfish, Do some research the 460 is a revolver with a 200 yard range capability.  If your not interested fine, I sure am.  The only question I have is will I get mine before Redhawk1 gets his?

Don Dick, it is your fault. I called my gun dealer and told him I wanted the 460 S&W. I am the first on his list. Thanks a lot.  :D

Redhawk 1...

Did your dealer have any info on this S&W revolver? Size, price, etc?

Like you, I find this caliber very interesting.

He only has the same info we have. He did say he would have a demo model at his S&W show he has every year to his range in April. It is the same set up as the first 500MAG 8 3/8 inch barrel. I did not ask him for a price, I just told him I wanted one, I guess I left that out.  But here is a link to the gun.

Thanks Redhawk 1. That revolver looks pretty appealing to me. My largest bore is .45 colt and if I decide to get a larger bore handgun, I think this will be the one.

What I like is, I know how the X frame handles and what the accuracy potential is. I can't wait to get this gun into my hands.  :D

I guess I am showing my age and certainly my bias: who could imagine paying $1253.00 for a handgun?

Jeeze! You usta could buy a car for that!

There is another aspect of this that I don't think anyone has mentioned.

I don't currently own a revolver. I have contemplated buying a big bore wheelgun for hunting. To me this looks like the most versatile of the bunch.

If I decide I don't like shooting the .460 I've got 2 other rounds, both capable hunting rounds, that I can try until I find one that suits me.

This might make this caliber one that gets alot more people to fork out some cash simply due to it's versatility. Buy the .500 and you can shoot .500 rounds only, same with the ruger offering. This one makes alot more sense to me.

460 S&W
« Reply #19 on: February 01, 2005, 01:19:00 PM »
To my mind the 460 S&W makes a heck of a lot more sense than the 500 S&W.  Far far cheaper to reload and shoot as it uses standard sized 45 bullets.

On the other hand I am not so far impressed with the X frame revolver.  Too big for the 460.  Might be sized right for the 500, but jeeze, ya gotta draw the line some where.  Other wise why not just chamber a revolver for the 20 mm round and be done with it?
