Wyo. Coyote Hunter:

i believe the .17hmr you are referring to belongs to my good friend knottybumpo and he did restock and finish it himself. It is a real shooter too. Since he is left handed, he put the right handed action on a left hand stock.

I was out in Saratoga Wy. last june.

I have a friend that lives there. We drifted the platte almost everyday for a week and shot prairie dogs the rest! I know what you mean about wind. i used my .17hmr and although it was tricky, I made some shots i was proud of.

I am sure that there will be a spring hunt in mo. next year and will probably be in june. Might even be in the same place as the one this year. If you follow that link, you can keep in touch with the folks who most likely will be there. You would be welcome there and in close contact with some of the most rabid squirrel hunters I know of.

there will be 4 invitational hunts this year and all are posted under that link. . I made the first one and will definitely be at the Shawnee hunt as i am the one that sets the dates for it. I hope to make the others as well.

The ticks at the hunt last week were tough. i wore a bugskin outfit under my outer wear and still managed to pull 10 or 15 off me.

they won't keep me out of the timber though. never saw any snakes!

                                                    luck!

Squacks, thanks for the reply. One of my pals here is from Mo. When I mentioned the spring squirrel hunting, he said the ticks were awful. :( >:( :-[ So I kind of wrote it off. But it would be a fun hunt if not for the bugs. Glad you had a good time here. The hunts you mentioned, were they on the rimfire link???? I am not sure if I could ever make any, but they would be fun. When I visited in Mich. they had an abundance of black squirrels. Never shot one of those, plus in Oregon they had those big beautiful western silver grey squirrel. Never got to shoot one of them either. Sure would have liked to added them to my bag. ;)

off to indiana this coming weekend to hunt squirrels a couple days. never shot at an indiana squirrel afore so i'll be takin notes.

squirrels should be cutting hickory nuts by now almost everywhere. i have reports of them cutting poplar, acorns and pecans as well in differant states.

there seems top be a good population of squirrels around the midwest this year.

hope you all have a great season!

it can now be said that Indiana squirrels are just as sneaky and hard to hit with my .22 as every other squirrel i ever hunted! lol!

now, they did not all escape unscathed and we took enough to make it a really great trip. South east Indiana has some pretty timber with hills and gullies.

the folks round there are great too!

i have an invite back next year which i would have a hard time passing on!

                                                        luck!

;)Glad you had a good hunt. That is something I will have to consider some time. I didn't realize so many squirrel seasons opened this early in the year. But it is hard to leave the trout fishing in the mts. and cool air for the humid climate of the mid west. :( >:( ;D :D

howdy all!

the annual shawnee hunt (this will be the 8th one!) is just a couple of weeks away. some of the folks who have come there for most of them have become close friends of mine and i look forward to seeing them again.

i have a couple of reports of good squirrel populations around the huntsite so that means i will probably get a chance to cook up several large pots of my favorite squirrel dish for a couple of evening meals.

i will post a link to any pictures that i run up on of the hunt!

                                            luck!

I didn't make it out Friday or this morning. The honey dew list keeps growing.. ::) ;D
BUT I did get to put the smack down on three tree dwellers with the RWS34 out of the neighbors huge oak as they pummelled my Jeeps with silver dollar sized acorns!!!

We don't have a season on squirrels here. There are so many you can shoot them any time. The leaves haven't left the trees yet, but when they do, the ole Model 92 Winny, and the light cast 38 specials will be knockin'em out of trees.

Same here!  My 6 year old grandson is ready to go with me.  I've got a lil Daisy BB gun for him to tote.  I discovered last year that the grey squirrel has moved into this area, so that will be top priority, and a lil (a lot) more challenging. ;D

Very few grays here but, if you go east about 35 miles they have plenty. Here we have millions of oak trees, and NATIVE pecan trees, and the mast is unbelievable this year.
My big pecan trees are drooping their so loaded.

howdy all;

here is a link to some descriptions of the hunt and an assortment of pictures.

there were lots of squirrels and we got some of them. they seemed to be traveling all day and only stopping to feed a little before dark which makes rifle shooting fun!

i estimate we got 100+ squirrels and it will get better yet this year.

howdy all!

i got out into wisconsin hunting squirrels this past weekend. it was a blind hunt. a friend and i hunted a piece of public land that showed trees on a google aerial map.

we slugged through a swamp only to find more swamp and the timber turned into black willow, cottonwood and soft maple! So much for the dreamed of unhunted hardwoods...lol!

we sludged out way to this woods anyways and there were actually squirrel nest in the edge made of...you guessed it...willow leaves and twigs.

there was not a single thing i could see in there that a squirrel could live on for long.  i spotted one gray squirrel and pointed it out to my partner who had never taken a squirrel before.

well this particualr squirrel must have been mighty tired of living in that particular willow tangle for it watched him crunch his way right under it to be shot! Gimme squirrel for sure! lol!

he got his first squirrel and i never intend to go back to that place again!

                                                    luck~

Howdy all!

Made it down to Southern Il. for a few days of squirrel hunting. Found them in Shellbark and Pignut hickory. there are a lot of nuts in the trees too with cuttins under most every one of them.

3 of us hunted a few days and got to eat a mess and brought a few home. i took a "few" squirrel rifles along and got a few squirrels with every one of them.

it was cool crisp sunny mornings and warm afternoons. the leaves have turned and the timber sure is pretty to look at. a few barking squirrels also makes it nice to listen at. lol.

Saw a few turkeys and a deer or 2.

 It was a great trip.

                                                   luck!

;) Squacks, what is your favorite state and time to squirrel hunt. I only hunted squirrel in Pa. and W. Va. in the fall. The last time I went was probably 10 years ago. We are planning a return to Pa. in the coming weeks. Thought I might hit the squirrel woods somewhere. :D

Well; down here in SE Oklahoma, I'm still waitin' for the 1st killing frost that usually is here by Oct 20th. ???   We've had so much rain this fall that the Knot-Hole Mosquitos will nearly carry you away, not to mention the chiggers.  :o  The acorn crop sure looks good this year.   My BRNO .22 is sighted in at 40 yds., with the quiet RWS subsonic hollowpoints, and I'm rarin' to go. ;D

I hunted down in the Shawnee National forest this trip which is on the end of southern Illinois. it's 300,000 acres approx.

there were no skeeters, no chiggers and no ticks this trip but you will wade knee deep in poison ivy anywhere you go.

a 5-day non res. license in Ill. will cost you $28 and you need a habitat stamp which cost another $5.50. 5 squacks a day/ 10 in possesion.

missouri is another good place and the Mark Twain National forest would be a good bet. they have daily stamps for $11.  6 squacks a day/ not sure of the possesion limit. there are also a lot of other public grounds in Mo.

                                               luck!

ps.  deer seasons are coming up soon and you will want to check those dates against the dates you plan to go. Squirrel season is out when deer season is in for Illinois. i think it is in 3 days in nov. and 4 days in dec. not sure of missouri.

the first frost usually sees the end of the botfly season if that is a problem where you hunt. it also ends the skeeter, tick and chigger problem!

Season here starts Aug.1 and although i may not hunt then it is not because i don't want too! lol!

sounds like  you got the right kind of equipment for sure. hope you have a great season!

is a knothole skeeter one of those big rectangle shaped jobs? Same as a stumphole skeeter i am guessing. i seen em!!! lol!

  Ain't that the truth ! lol.  ;D

The stumphole and knot-hole mosquito may be the same critter, I don't know.  These guys are big with a Huge beak like a HYPO needle.  Scare a man out of his boots.  They're not noisey, and you don't notice their bite till you see 'm all over you.  They'll cause you to hurt yourself trying to swat 'em off.  :D

As usual the shawnee hunt was great fun.  I always look forward to it every year. The spring hunt in Missouri was great fun too even with all the ticks. The season in Kansas opens the first day of June and continues to the last day of Feb. Good mast crop this year and lots of squirrels. The weather has not been cooperative for squirrel hunting. Too much wind and rain all the time.

howdy all!

got over into western wisconsin last Sunday for a 1 day hunt. it was beautiful day but just a bit windy.

zero'd and used a win. 52 miroku for the day and it is a keeper. my partner and i took 9 squirrels for the day and saw deer and turkeys besides.

nice to get out and enjoy the day before the real cold weather gets here. hunting in real cold weather gear and cleaning squirrels in the cold aint quite the same thing! lol!

howdy all!

Last weekend was a ral beauty in northwest illinois! 70 deg. days in november are welcome!

thought it was just a bit breezy, the squirrels were into black walnuts and that makes them a little easier to find. they are also on the ground a lot looking for those nuts.

the leaves have all fallen and late in the mornings it dried out enough for them to become crunchy. That makes it tougher getting through the timber without them knowing you are coming.

my friend and i took 15 together in 3 hunts. i think of the 15 maybe 4 were fox squirrels and 1 of those was as big as they get.

i cleaned squirrels every morning while my friend made breakfast. Good trade as far as i am concerned! lol!

hope you are all having a good season.

Well the weather report said today would be clear and calm and near 60 degrees.   So my grandson and I took to the woods this morning.   I remember when I got my first BB gun, so I let him shoot, and shoot he did.   He was so wound up this morning.  Got his mommy up early and here they came.  Fortunately I had everything ready to go, so we hit out for squirrel country.  We had a great time together, and the squirrels should be little wiser now.  But tomorrow I'll see if they learned from todays' experience.

you are lucky if your grandson lives close enough for the 2 of you to hunt together! I wish you both many happy days in the timber together. he's lucky to have a grandpa that will take him.

my Grandpa took me bass fishin a lot when i was a kid. i think  about those days often and every time i tie on a chuggar or zara spook.
