Hey fella's, nice to know all the interest in squirrel hunting. I live in Indiana and was brought up hunting small game. My dad was from Searcy, Arkansas and told me many stories; not just about squirrels, but also catching opposums in cages and feeding them for awhile, then my grandfather would kill an and my grandmother would fix em. Same with raccoons. Anyway, I still have my dad's old single shot stevens model 15 that he bought when he was only 9 years old. Picking cotton for 50 cents a week was how he was able to buy that little rifle. That was in the 1930's. As we grew up, my dad let me use that old stevens; he had bought himself a very nice Belgium Browning SA-22 (which I have now too). My dad passed at age 80 some years ago. Well, as I too have grown old, my eyes are not that good anymore for iron sights, so I mounted a scope on that old single shot stevens model 15. My goodness, it shoots the lights out at 50 yards! It stlll has no problem ejecting the .22 shells. As for the squirrels, I have no issues using my dad's old stevens, lots of memories in that old gun.....and each time I hold my dad's guns or go hunting with them...it's a good feeling to know that he is still here with me. There are plenty of fox squirrels here in Indiana and by living out in the county, I have permission to hunt a large woods with a creek flowing through it. Full of white/red oaks an beech trees. I just walk across the road from my house, that's how close it is. I could easily limit out within an hour, but I walk and set and enjoy my time, thinking of times past. I do come home each time with a squirrel or two, but it's taking the time to enjoy the woods and the memories that I enjoy the most.
Happy Hunting!
