howdy all!

Well, i killed one squirrel with my caplock rifle this year and missed a few! lol! one squirrel was not enough to win the iron sights contest. a feller from Arkansas brought in 4 and won it easily.

There are a lot of squirrels in Shawnee this year and just loads of mast for them to eat. they were on the move mostly and tough to get many of them. It was interesting to say the least.

We had one big squirrel fry and most folks took some home. I took 4 a couple of times but never did manage a limit in a day.

Truth told, that's the way i like it! I like to hunt for squirrels. It's more fun when it's some tougher to get them.

The weather could not have been more perfect for hunting . The food was wonderful too.

A great time was had by all!

                                                               luck!

Hey;

i had that exact shotgun you are talking about when i was a kid. i have a 12ga. one still with a solid rib. i think they sold for $12 back in 1921. They are still dependable game getters today.

once in a while i use mine to hunt doves with. It's fun and if there are many doves, i get all i need with it.

I just love the feel of those old guns and it's always fun to imagine the characters that probably carried them and the stories behind them. Real folks carried a gun like that not the snobby type you know...lol!

FourBee;

it wasn't far. under 20 yards for sure. I missed a couple as well. These old tri-focal eyes of mine just aint up to irons anymore. I sure had fun blowin smoke at them though. They were downright insensed about the whole affair! lol!

Headed back down there again soon. It's a hard place for me to stay away from....

Hello all :)
I am new to hunting this year and have started out with squirrel hunting. Here in Maine there's no closed season for red squirrels so I've been able to shoot quite a few reds and only one gray :(
Any tips on finding grays?
Reds are small, but delicious!
Has anyone ever tanned the furs and made clothing with them?
I'm attempting to make fur lined gloves with the reds.
A lot of people here think I'm a bit odd, but its good to know I'm not alone in the squirrel hunting world :)

I know about these old eyes and iron sights.  They don't seem to go together anymore.

Hey snowpetals; when you say 'Red' do you mean Fox Squirrels ?  If so, you'll like the grays.  They are more tender and easier to skin.   Never made any clothes, but have tanned several coon, squirrel, a  bobcat and coyote.  I like to use Tannit from Nite Lite at HuntSmart.com

Fourbee-
Naw.  there are no fox squirrels here (I wish there was). We just have grays and the tiny american red in my picture above. They eat mostly conifer seeds.

An old friend of mine now deceased many years used to skin and tan the hides, and cut them in a circular pattern to make shoe laces out of them in the Great Depression. They also made gloves out of them, and money pokes.

Hey snowpetals; Welcome to the Board.  Reading Dee's post, I caught your name at the bottom and put two and two together and realized you're not the typical squirrel hunter we're accustom to seeing on here.  Just the other day the 17 year old daughter of a friend of mine became the first woman to kill a bear during archery season here in Oklahoma.  She's been on TV, and every local newspaper.

Yeah, I guess there aren't a lot of woman squirrel hunters? I've found that ever since I've started hunting I've been getting criticized for being a hunter and a woman. I have a freezer full of squirrels to prove that women can shoot well too, lol :)

Kelsey made the same comment about criticism and the strange looks she gets from male hunters when checking in her deer or other game.   Said she's been hunting with her Daddy since she was 9 years old.

We have had a few lady squirrel hunters at the Shawnee hunt over the years and there have been and are women squirrel hunters in my family.

If you are taking squirrels with a rifle then you are also a decent shot at least.

Keep it up! Enjoy yourself. At the beginning of this thread, i wrote what i know of squirrel hunting. I hope you take the time to read it. The information will help you if there is no experienced squirrel hunters to learn from.

Gray squirrels prefer hardwood timber with some understory to it. If you have oak or beech up there, try hunting around those.

Hey fella's, nice to know all the interest in squirrel hunting. I live in Indiana and was brought up hunting small game. My dad was from Searcy, Arkansas and told me many stories; not just about squirrels, but also catching opposums in cages and feeding them for awhile, then my grandfather would kill an and my grandmother would fix em. Same with raccoons. Anyway, I still have my dad's old single shot stevens model 15 that he bought when he was only 9 years old. Picking cotton for 50 cents a week was how he was able to buy that little rifle. That was in the 1930's. As we grew up, my dad let me use that old stevens; he had bought himself a very nice Belgium Browning SA-22 (which I have now too). My dad passed at age 80 some years ago. Well, as I too have grown old, my eyes are not that good anymore for iron sights, so I mounted a scope on that old single shot stevens model 15. My goodness, it shoots the lights out at 50 yards! It stlll has no problem ejecting the .22 shells. As for the squirrels, I have no issues using my dad's old stevens, lots of memories in that old gun.....and each time I hold my dad's guns or go hunting with them...it's a good feeling to know that he is still here with me. There are plenty of fox squirrels here in Indiana and by living out in the county, I have permission to hunt a large woods with a creek flowing through it. Full of white/red oaks an beech trees. I just walk across the road from my house, that's how close it is. I could easily limit out within an hour, but I walk and set and enjoy my time, thinking of times past. I do come home each time with a squirrel or two, but it's taking the time to enjoy the woods and the memories that I enjoy the most.

Happy Hunting!

howdy all!

Was down in Shawnee for a few days last week. start of the hunt was really dry conditions and it was very difficult to get up on squirrels.

it rained one morning for a good bit and the conditions greatly improved. A feller could put the slip on them after that!

I ran into a really nice bunch of young squirrels(fryers!). Lots of the leaves were down and we could see each other from quite a distance.

that's when rifles shine! I used a .22 mag. and was proud of a few shots.

there were 4 of us hunting together and it was a really great trip. Good friends and camp food.

the squirrels were just a bonus....

                                                                                luck!

Hello! Here in Texas we have a good blend of Fox and Gray. Gray being in the eastern parts but Fox dominates the rest if the state. Most counties have a year long open season with no bag limits so you can hunt them year around in these counties. I have done most of my hunting with a .22 or 12 gauge. # 4 shot is preferred. I remember the year of my divorce. My money was going to my attorney so I literally would take a couple and maybe a rabbit daily for about 5 months. Used everything from a .22 short, .38 Spl, to a 12 gauge. Cooked everything in the crockpot with veggies. My top shot was a tree rat I got with my .38 Spl Model 10 using 158 gr LRN bullets. A dead rest and I nailed it at the top of a 200 yr old oak tree. Right behind the shoulder and he fell stone dead. Left lung tissue among the grass below as if he was hit by a high velocity HP. I must have taken over 150 during that time. All good eating! Its good to meet another serious tree rat getter. And you never get burned out eating them daily. I can attest to that!

There's lots of squirrels in SE KS and the season runs from June 1 to the last day of Feb. Limit is 5 a day.   I know only 1 other person who hunts squirrels around here.
Ol Squacks is pretty deadly with that smoke pole. One year at the shawnee hunt he got 4 with it and won the iron sights contest. He's the only one to ever win the iron sights contest with a muzzle loader. Squirrels tremble at the mention of his name and that is the truth.
I will tan a few squirrel hides every year and make knife sheaths out of them. They make a nice knife sheath for a squirrel hunter.

HEY SARGE!

Everybody, Sarge has won the irons contest most years we have had one in shawnee so you should now be gettin an idea of who it is they really fear! lol!

I also have a knife he made for me in one of those squirrel hide sheaths. It is a perfect tool for skinning, it being a small clip point blade and carbon steel to boot.

he is also a mean harmonica player and if any of you all ever show up at the shawnee hunt, he aint afraid to prove it to you! lol!

in fact, I'll just let you see for yourself. here be the 2 of us down in Beanblossom, Indiana a couple of years ago.

It was cold out in n/w il. this past weekend. Got out this morning about 10 am and hunted a little over 2 hours.
the squirrels were out pretty good on the south side of the hills in the sun. They were still cutting hickory nuts and there was a really big crop of them there this year. looks like they had started rutting already.

Hey Squacks, are there any squirrels attached to those tails or did that 22 mag just leave the tail laying on the ground?

SHEARS !  I never thought of shearing their backsides.  That's a good idea.   I just got my .22 back from my son.  I'll check the sighting, and go visit the squirrel woods.  I like those little Grey's.  They're so tender.  ;D

FOURBEE:

I have a friend that can skin grey squirrels, gut and cut them up with just a pair of game shears.

I have since borrowed the gut and cut method he uses but still make the intial cut under the tail with a knife. It is a very good way to go about it.

I have to use my squirrel knife for somethin!!!

Squirrel season went out here yesterday! Aug. 1 is the normal opener and it looks so far off now.

There is probably a spring hunt in Mo. this June. I have gone a couple of times but it hardly resembles fall hunting. It's tough finding something that squirrels are eating in a big way at that time of year.

That's for sure.  This winter I was out in the woods with a pair of binoculars, and watched a squirrel eat bark off a tree limb for the longest.   I've read that they do that, but never had seen it done before.

went over to beanblossom, indiana this past weekend with a few friends. we hunted squirrels 2 mornings and went to the bean blossom bluesfest Sat. evening.
Sat. we hunted public ground and ran into quite a few hunters. i do not like hunting squirrels in close proximity to others so the friend i had along and I backed out. it was his first ever squirrel hunt and i was somewhat disapointed that is was not a better experience for him.
next morning we hunted private ground. He got his first ever squirrel with a .17hmr and a head shot. Not a bad beginning.
5 of us got 18 squirrels Sun. morning.
There were no hickory nuts in either woods i hunted there. the squirrels were eating walnut, red oak and sugar maple seeds.
 Great weather and good friends!

hope you find the info useful.
Knotty and i made it over to s/w Wisconsin yesterday for a 1 day hunt. There is just loads of mast there this year.
when all those walnuts fall off those trees it's going to be like walking on marbles!
it was a fine cool morning with some patchy fog and little wind for most of the day.
We saw a few squirrels, deer and turkeys. There a signs of more squirrels to come.
