Mack:
Those sure are some purty squirrels out there. I know a feller in S.C. hunts pecan orchards and gets a few of those every year.
I have taken a couple of solid black squirrel around here but never one like those.
                                                     luck!

howdy all!
Squirrel season is about to open here again soon (Aug. 1). Spent a little time yesterday sharpening skinning knives and putting my gear together.
The mast looks fair this season around this part of the country. Not great just fair.
Hope you all have a safe and enjoyable season!
Here is a link to a squirrel cleaning video a friend made of me last Feb. Some of you may find it useful.

Nice video Squaks.   Too hot for hunting for this ole softee.
Course, when I was younger the temperature wasn't considered a factor. :)

FourBee:
I know what you mean about the heat. I don't enjoy hunting on really hot (+100) days. Squirrels don't move much except real early anyways.
I usually do try and make a few trips in Aug. though. I like to know when squirrels start on the shagbark. It groups them up and you can get a few in pretty short order even if it is hot.
This is going to be a strange year methinks. I see lots of walnuts around here and they look pretty stunted from lack of moisture. If it rains some, they may make a nut yet...but it better get busy!
My heart goes out to the midwest farmers. They are plowing under corn all over and the soybeans look pitiful. All that work....

Did not see but 1 on Sun. Weather was great..a cool 50 deg. Sat. morning. Squirrels were cutting Hickory nuts a little and there is just loads of mast out there.
Took the the only 6 I shot at. Those CZ rifles will sure nuff shoot!

there are loads of squirrels in s. Il. this year and tons of mast for them to eat.
Been there twice so far, first time it was dry and hard to get near them. Second time completely different and we got to eat all the squirrel we cared to.
There are loads of little squirrels there now. It's gonna be a great year for squirrel hunting.
                                            luck!

I went out with my 10 year old son on Sunday afternoon, we didn't see anything until after sunset but I managed to get one before quitting time.
