Choate varmint stock
« on: January 16, 2005, 08:43:01 PM »
Anyone try the varmint stock from Choate Machine yet? I know most feel they are ugly as sin but how do they perform?

I was considering one for my UV in 22Mag but was looking for real world input first.

Hope to get the UV to the range tomorrow to see how it does stock. I am planning on sending my Sporty to the factory for some barrels soon ie. 17HMR and another 22Mag.

The Savage with the Rifle Basix trigger and my heavy barreled 223 are going as well.

Damn the weather, I'm going to the range!

Don't know anything about the stock but I know what you mean about getting to the range. I used to drive an over the road truck and have been in your area several times so I know it's got to be cold up there. I'll keep my fingers crossed for ya and be careful and not get frost bite. :D

Did some plinking today. 22UV, 223 Handi and the Savage 93 in 22Mag.

Colder than I thought. Hard to shoot well, no gloves that I own fit in the trigger guard safely. Shot sort strings at a time. Clay pigeons at about 80 yards. Lots of warm-up breaks in the clubhouse.

Try again tomorrow. Might get in the 20's.

Ok, I did it. I ordered a varmint stock for my new Sporty in 17 HMR that followed me home the other day.

Called Choate Tuesday morning and ordered up the fore-end and buttstock. Arrived Thursday afternoon. Installed Thursday afternoon. Included with the buttstock were extra screws hidden in the spacers,. If you choose to shorten the stock by removing spacers, the screws hidden in the spacers are shorter. Looks great, perfect fit. Nice wide fore-end for shooting off bags. Bi-pod attatchment rail looks sturdy.

I hope to have the scope arrive Friday so I can take the new rig to the range Saturday for breaking in and testing. The new stock set while most view it as ugly seems to fit real well and I like it so far. Shooting it will show me more. If it goes well I'll consider one for my Handi in 223.

Cross your fingers that the postman/UPS guy will show up with my scope.

Well, that was quick. Scope just showed up. Swift Premier 6-18x44 with adjustable objective and target turrets. Ordered Tuesday from EABCO, the young lady physically checked inventory before finishing my order. $199 shipped. Includes a sun shade.

Bi-pod and ammo on the list tonight and range time tomorrow. Scope will be mounted in Burris rings from Fletcher Arms in Waukesha. 24.95 in stock for you local guys that might be lurking. Yes they are the high/matte/1 inch rings.

Did I get too much scope? Might put this one on the 223 and put the Simmons ATV on the 17HMR but that leaves the Bushy from the 223 for the UV in 22 mag.  Ha ha, might just get another Swift, man are these things clear.

Found a Harris clone bi-pod and put it on the new rig. Mounted the scope and off to the range.

Bi-pod has a bit of wobble on the Choate stock but not on the UV stock. I'll fix that with some adhesive backed foam strips.

My first time shooting with a bi-pod. It felt weird. Shooting bench was not level and targets weren't either. I usually line cross-hairs of scope up with lines on target, had to guesstimate today.

The Hummer shot well. Shoot 5 and clean, shoot 5 and clean. Didn't feel comfortable with polishing the barrel. It likes all brands of ammo at 40 yards. Hope to move to 100 on Saturday and really see what she'll do. Did all my shooting on 18x as well. Never shot over 9 power before, it really magnifies the shakes of the shooter.

Put the bi-pod on the UV. Daddy like!! The UV seems to like CCI TNT's and Rem Premiers, both were grouping well and had similar POI. The UV needs breaking in as well. Hope to take both the UV and the Hummer out to 100 yards Saturday.

Did a brief test of the Choate stock from the prone position in my base ment. I like it. Seemed steady as a rock. I'll do more practice in the prone position when it gets a bit dryer at the range.

If anyone is interested I could take a quick pic of the Hummer with new stock. I'll then try to post same here.

Edit: No failure to fire or failure to extract issues. Only failure of shooter to perform. Hornady,CCI,Federal ammo was used, some BT some HP. This was more of a test/break-in session than an accuracy session.

Darn batteries!

Took a few pix of the Sporty sporting it's new stock and scope today. Wore out the batteries so now I can't up-load them to my computer for a few hours. Batteries are recharging now.

cmk3, there is a little screw knob adjustment thing near the rear of the stock. Fine for when the bi-pod is set to it's lowest position. Not enough adjustment when the legs are fully extended. Perhaps I'll contact Choate to see if they have a longer screw thingy.

In my informal test in the basement in the prone position. I found the set-up to be very steady. A small rear bag might do the trick like you suggested.

Already considering this stock for my Handi in 223. Next paycheck though or the next one after that...

Ps. might get the sleeping bag mat out and try it prone at the range Saturday.Still quite a bit of snow on the ground.

Have a pic of the Hummer wearing it's Choate stock. Let's see if I can get it to work.

Hazard, so far I like the stocks. Never shot this rifle before changing the stockers to this. My 22LR Sporty still has the factory stocks and because it's a woods carrying gun they'll stay. This rifle however will be a bench/sit in a field for awhile rifle. This thing is heavy now. Not sure of the total weight gain with all the goodies but it is considerable.

The t-rail adapter is included with the stock. As are (with mine any ways) extra buttpad screws for when/if you change the length of pull. Might e-mail Choate to see if there is a cheek piece add-on for this stock. Hard to get just the right feel when you first settle in behind the rifle. Might just be my inexperience showing though.

I like the pistol grip. I use my bottom three fingers to grip/pull the stock into my shoulder. The only movement then is from my breathing and heartbeat. Shows up real well with scope cranked way up.

After tomorrows range session, I'll check the balance of the checkbook and decide if another set of these stocks are going on my 223.

One more note, remember my commeny about the fitting of the bi-pod. I used a Harris copy (Sooters Choice I think). I doesn't snug up perfectly to this fore end. It has a bit of side to side rock/slop to it. Not a big deal to me, easily solved with some adhesive foam stiprs to snug it up. The same bi-pod is a perfect fit for my UV in 22 Mag.

cmk3, you bet you can get some trigger time. :D
