Ruger No. 1 trigger adjustment
« on: January 17, 2005, 06:01:42 AM »
I have a Ruger No. 1 rifle with a trigger pull weight of 4 and 1/2 pounds.  I would like to get the bull weight lightened to 2 and 1/2 or 3 pounds.  I am considering installing a Moyers adjustable trigger to lighten the pull weight.  Another option would be polishing the trigger and hammer sear surfaces.  What are the pros and cons of each option from you guys that are familiar with these rifles and Moyers triggers?  Let me add that both options are work I'd have a gunsmith do.  Thanks for your opinions.

The triggers have adjustment screws and in theory are easily adjustable. The newer rifles use MIM'd triggers. The real problem is the sear engagement.. I usually adjust the ruger trigger if possible.  If that fails install a Moyers and adjust.  Most times the stock trigger does just fine, especially on the older rifles.  High speed hammer springs are the most helpful addition to this action, along with lightened hammers.  This decreases the relatively slow lock time and helps accuracy..  I've used several Moyers triggers and they worked just fine.  I've a single set made by Moyers for the No.1 that I'm going to install in a 25-06 B model..  I bought this as a project along with a really nice piece of English walnut..  Will make a beautiful rifle..

Usually a Ruger #1 trigger will require a spring change and a bit od adjustment not much more.    Gunnut, how does the Moyers single set trigger compare to the Kiplinger?
There is no such thing as over kill!!!!  :-)

Judson- I went and looked and it is a kepplinger single set..I guess the CRS strikes again..  The Moyers that are in the parts box are just adjustable.  I haven't installed a single set yet(kepplinger) yet but have looked it over a bit. Very well made and when I checked pricey too..  I don't remember being that flush but I guess I was..  It's a project for myself so has been on the back burner for some time, know what I mean?  I have several that need doing- a 1922 M2 action and solid ribbed barrel that need setup and a stock, a M24 Remington in 22 short with a tang sight needs a takedown plunger lock spring, a Featherweight Pre64 M70 in 243 that wants to be restored and a M71 that needs a restock..  Also have a Pederson double that needs checkering and on and on////
Have been shorting my projects for those of others...  Am finishing a mauser in 35 Whelan nect and a 25-06 M700 for dear friend shortly.  Going to put a carved border checkeing pattern on these 2..  Sorry but the Single set is a kepplinger??
