Heavy loads in 45 Win Mag
« on: January 17, 2005, 08:37:29 AM »
I was wondering if anyone has experience with this caliber with bullets 300+ grains.

The heaviest I've tried is the 300 grn Hornady and can't find load data for anything heavier.

Thanks

45 Win Mag caution

The only TC I've ever seen broken was with a 45 Win mag. The factory loads are hot and the guy tried to "improve " on factory loads , well a combination of high pressure and that big case head cracked the frame on his TC. Not exactly a blow up but a ruined TC anyway. A round that should be loaded with a little caution. May be fine for an Encore but a little big in the head for a TC frame. just my 2 cents worth. Also saw a Ruger blackhawk cylinder split by a 45 ACP cylinder lengthened to accept 45WM. Use caution the factory has pressure guns to test their loads most of us don't.

I have always stayed with loads from manuals with my 45wm.I cant see needing anything more for my use.A 250 xtp over a charge of Blue Dot works great in mine it will clock around 1500- 1600 fps and very accurate.

I heartily agree w/ wheelgun. I too only use the bluedot load out of the speer manual. Having fired more than a couple 310 gr. bullets from a .44 Mag. I must say that I am in no hurry to load that kind of bullet wt. in an even larger case. I do on the otherhand suspect that a decent  medium pressure loading of a 300 plus gr. Lead bullet would prove to be very accurate. Later   Marty
