Shoot 410 shot shells out of a 45-70 ???

Shoot 410 shot shells out of a 45-70 ???  heard this today....that the old time soldiers used 410 shot shells to hunt with in the field during war time.
Is this possible ????????

My brother and I used to shoot 410's out my dads old sharps he had.  Got a lot of grouse with those rifles.  Didn't ever seem to affect them.
