HELP, I WANT A COLT
« on: January 17, 2005, 03:06:35 PM »
Well I shot a 1911 for the first time yesterday and you guessed it I'm hooked! The gun I shot belonged to a friend of a friend, it was a Colt 1911A1 blued made in 1950-sweet!(and he got it from some guy for $550!) I looked at springfield mil-spec and it didn't compare- I could'nt even get the slide release to budge on it! I also coud'nt have a 1911 made in Brazil! I looked at a Kimber and it was very tight, but not the goverment style that I like, also too much money, and also not a Colt. I know I want a Colt new or used, old or new. I would Like it to be the Government style with the spur hammer and preferably an arched mainspring housing. I would have to probably do a trade ( I have a like new Marlin 1895 Cowboy 45/70 that I cant afford to shoot any more and have no use for) but I may be able to add a few bucks on top of it. But I realy dont want to spend very much ( kinda hard to do on a Colt though huh). So where is a good place to look? Opinions on model and vintage? New Series 80(70 is too much money but I love em)? 1991A1? But I guess I realy want an older Colt.
 Thanks for your help guys.

Go through all the auctions at www.gunbroker.com and all the ads on www.gunsamerica.com.  Just by looking through all the Colts, you'll probably be able to narrow down your focus quite a bit on what you want, and what you can afford.

You can also get quite a bit of info at:  www.m1911.org

Generally, what you get really should boil down to what you plan to use it for.

I can definately appreciate your obsession with the Colt. A buddy of mine sold me a 70 series Combat Commander in 38 super and I love it. He was kind enough to let it go for $300 too. Buy a subscription to the Gunlist. It resembles a news paper of sorts but has guns from A to Z from across the country. I've bought guns from as far away as Anchorage Alaska out of this paper.

catblaster, the first handgun my dad gave me was the Colt 1911-A1 made cerca 1940, and let me tell you, IT ROCKS!  .45's RULE!  It was the 1911 that got me hooked on being a gun-freak.  It's well worth whatever you can pay for it.  I've shot my buddy's Kimber 1911 and i just don't like how tight it is, it's not the same, get an older one.  I've even been told that that "slop" i guess you might call it, is one of the best features of the 1911.
