What do you think of precision rifle brand sabbots?
« on: January 17, 2005, 08:13:56 PM »
What is the verdict on these?  I really liked some of the all lead sabots they make and the web site seems to have some good info regarding ballistic coeff and accuracy, KE and Trajectory.  The flathead and extreme hp caught my eye in particular.  Do these shoot well and how do they compare regarding ability to retain mass after hitting a critter - does the all lead hold up as well as some of the copper plated ones?  Thanks - am thinking of ordering some up to sight my sidekick when it gets here, so any feedback would be helpfull as I need to order them soon.

I know dozens of guys who shoot these sabots and they all say the same thing.
They are accurate and very good game killers.
Aim small don't miss.

They are expensive....but extremely accurate with a load tuned well to your gun.
The BC are somewhat inflated as are those of most manufacturers.  For example the 195gr .357 DC is advertised as .375 BC I believe.  The actual value from shooting this bullet is under .300...but higher than any other ML bullet.
I shot these brand bullets exclusively for 3 years until the 200gr Shockwave hit the market.  PR bullets perform very well on game.  I never got to shoot a deer with the Keith Nose, but got many with the QT and DC varieties.  Most shots at all ranges 20-200 yards were pass-thrus.  The only exceptions were a 70 yard and a 170 yard frontal shots.  The closer of the two actually flipped the deer end-over-end dead on arrival.  I recovered the bullet on the front side of the stomach, flattened and the size of a nickel.
While the company will tell you that you can get 2300 fps out of them, I don't believe it.  I personally, and all of the shooters I PERSONALLY know, have never gotten much over 2000 fps without losing accuracy.  The soft lead deforms at high velocity, leading to errant bullet flight and sabot non-separation.
If you don't mind the price, go for it!

I shoot the 195 gr. DC from precision rifle and I think they work great. I ordered the 240 lot from him. You get a big savings the more you order. The best thing to do is try 1 pack and if they work good order a larger quantity.  :D

I've been shooting the old version of the Extremes and the polymer-tipped QTs in 300, 350, & 400gr sizes for 3 years now and all I can say is that they are "the cat's meow".  :agree:

Extrememly accurate and deadly on game - my success rate with them is 100%.  Go here to see what a 350gr QT looks like after taking out a small boar:

This was shot thru the shoulder and it embedded under the skin in the opposite shoulder.

I love them.  Extremely accurate and easy to load in my Encore.  I was using the 260 grain and I just bought a bunch of the 300 grain to try.  I had excellent results with the 260 grain dead center and 100 grains of American Pioneer Powder FFG.

nobody tried the flathead or extreme?
« Reply #6 on: January 18, 2005, 09:34:03 PM »
I believe it the dc is accurate, but was more wondering about the flathead and the extreme which are supposed to have like .250 bc and are a little cheaper than the dc.  Also question of the all lead vs copper trade offs.  Thanks again

the extreme is not as accurate as the dead centre. you can draw the comparison of a nosler ballistic tip v.s. a remington psp. they will both do a good enough job. one will hold tighter groups than the other, so experiment. buy one pack of each and see what happens. as for the lead vs jacketed,  I spent a whole day tracking and finishing off a doe shot with one of the hornady jacketed bullets. I wasn't shooting them, but I owed it to the animal to follow through, even though the shooter was ready to give up and continue hunting. in my opinion, the deer size game do not offer enough body cavity to allow the jacketed bullets to do their job.

upnorth is "right on" about the only way to know for sure is to test both types to see which shoots best.   In my Knight, I have been unable to find loads with the Dead Centers that shoot as well as the Extremes or QTs ................ every one of these guns are different, so you just gotta test until you're happy.

As far as lead vs copper............................ I believe the PR guys are right in the concept of having a bullet expend all it's energy inside the game - that's very logical.   The jacketed bullets may allow for complete pass thrus on game and that can be preferable for tracking blood trails - but there are no guarantees even with them, as many have spoke of not getting pass thrus with XTPs and the like.

I have to wonder if it even matters a WHOLE lot.   When you punch a hole almost a 1/2" wide thru an animals chest cavity - it's gonna die ....... period.  I think projectile weight is more important than bullet composition.   The impact of 300 to 400gr of bullet hitting at decent speed (say 1600fps) is gonna cause massive, death-inducing trauma whether it passes thru or not.  But if using the 200gr or less bullets, the trauma is less and then expending energy inside the chest cavity takes on more importance.   IMHO anyway      for what that is worth.

I would say the Extreme is probably a good bullet.  No personal experience jsut what I've heard.  Remember though that the BC is not  .250!  It is likely sub-.2.  PR's BCs are best used to compare to other PR bullets, they have much better correlation to each other than to their real-life BC.  This is unfortunately true of most bullet companies.

jdbe : The one bullet I used that gave me excellent performance was the silver lighting in 300 grain ,the deer I shot with them never took more then 3 steps. Two holes that had a blood trail a blind man good follow,on the other hand I did also try there QT'S 45 in 350 grain excellent bullet, but did release all it energy inside the chest area ,only one hole no exit hole ,that made it hard to follow a good blood trail,I did find the big 8 pointer but he did about 100 yards beore he went down.
I just ordered some swag (lead)bullets from Mark over from Hunter Boolets,he has a web page his service is excellent and also his prices are 1/2 the price of the precision, I ordered some  451 diameter flat nose boat tails for my 54 cal. thunderhawk
