Ruger 96 44 magnum
« on: February 04, 2003, 03:17:02 AM »
I guess this rifle fits here....it has a barrel band so I suppose it's a "carbine" too.  I have a 30-30 trapper and a new Ruger Compact in .243 as well a host of others.  I found the 96 more comfy to me than the Win.94.  I like the short throw of the lever and I shot two shots downrange at my cardboard deer target...both were kill shots and I could put my finger in the hole.

I am excited about deer hunting with it.  Almost all my previous deer have been taken with a scoped gun including my ever so accurate Remington .308 Mohawk.  I know the .44 is not at the top of the list as far as deer killers but there are a TON of deer killed in Michigan using muzzleloaders with .44 sabots.  The .44 cartridge has to have a little edge over them.

The only strange things I have found are; the stock is very soft and takes any mark....in fact I got in cheaper because of two dings at the dealers.  Also the semi-auto Deerfield has a peep sight back further to the eye and the 96 has a buckhorn....can I get that peep on the 96?

Lastly I am thinking about a red-dot....I want to possibly use the Ruger rings that came with it....what red-dot scope is recommended?

thanks....NorthernMich

by the way I wish the Ruger 77 Compact I bought was in .308 but I wanted to try the .243

I used to sell guns at a Gander Mountain in MN, even though our rifle zone is almost completely thick brush, the 96 wasnt all that popular.  I couldnt believe it.  I love the rifle, you can work the lever without having your palm leaving the pistol grip!  I am not sure if you can get the Deerfield Peep on your 96, might want to talk to Ruger about that.  You could however, put an Ashley Outdoors peep on it, very popular sight.  As well as a red dot scope?  Might want to look at Aimpoint.  Your rings are Med 1" I assume.  Not a lot of 1" red dots out there, kinda defeats the purpose.  You should be able to find something though.  Good luck!

so I should use a 30mm red dot?  What kind of rings do you use with the 96 and an Aimpoint?  I was thinking either a peep or red dot to improve accuracy.

Deer season is over for now but I can't wait to try it out.

NorthernMich-

Just a word about peep sights.  New England Custom guns makes a peep sight that is designed to install on the rear scope mount base of Ruger rifles.  Their web site is:  www.newenglandcustomgun.com

If that's not to your liking then I'm sure that Williams Gunsight has either a Foolproof or WGRS peep for your Ruger.

Hope this helps.

I use the Ruger 96 in the U.P. and love it. I reloaded 240 gr. softpoints and leaves a heck of a blood trail on deer. As far as sights I had Marble Arms install their green fiber optic sights. I don't know if  your  in the U.P. but its another option. Good luck.

Millett makes a good 1" red dot which would allow you to use the rings that come with your gun.  Also if you decide to go with the 30 mm I think you can return the 1' rings to Ruger and they will send you the 30 mm rings free of charge or for shipping costs.
