What are the experiences of those that have used the .17 Remington on called in coyotes? How "pelt friendly" is it? Any Pros or Cons one should know before buying or building one? If I build on I am thinking about using a Ruger No. 1 action, any comments? Lawdog

The .17 Rem. is the most pelt friendly factory round on the market. I have never taken a coyote with mine, but I did take a wild dog that weighted abt 120 lbs. From abt 175 yrds. 1 shot in the chest and he dropped like a wet rag. I have a .17 Rem. , a .17-223 and a .17 AH. I would recomand that you try 1 box of 28 grn. Calhoon bullets. Your gun will eather like them or it won`t, but if it does they are a great bullet. I shoot the .19 gr. Calhoons in my .17 AH and would not worry about takeing a coyote at 200 yrds. with it. The .17 Rem. with the 28 gr. Calhoons, or what ever 25 to 30 gr. bullet shoots best, should be good to at least 400 yrds.

Thanks Catfish for the come back. If I go the .17 route it will be the .17 Remington. I'm wondering what the effect on a coyote will be at called in ranges, say 75 yards for an average? Just wondering how big the exit wound would be? Lawdog

Exit wound??? The light Berger MEF bullets or 20 gr. V-max bullets generally don't make it out the other side. :grin:

I've shot about 35 cayotes with the 17rem and no pass throughs, Plus i never had any run offs. They have been shot from about 15yds to just over 200 yds. I do use the calhoon bulleys, Have used the little v-max some but like the calhoon the best. A person can' go wrong with the 17 rem. And on p-dogs its red sails in the sun set.....Joe........

What ever you do don`t use the Berger MEF bullets on a coyote. They are good accurate bullets, but they do not have the penitration needed for game of that size. I have shot groundhogs in the rear end and not had enough penitration to kill them, it would paralize them, but not kill them.
