Rolling Block Project
« on: January 18, 2005, 03:06:47 PM »
Hello all.
One of my projects nowadays is restoring a 1901 Remington rolling block rifle in 7 mm.  Its in pretty good mechanical condition but could really use an original replacement buttstock.  Anybody know where I can find one?  I was thinking if someone was sporterizing one of these #5 rifles and didn't need the military wood anymore, I'd be happy to give it a good home.

Other possible sources?

I've seen takeoff wood from Rollers on Ebay every so often. You might try a search there for Rolling Block stocks. They usually don't go really high for military stocks.

Check with either www.gunstocksinc.com or Treebone carving, as each make stocks for the RRB.  Won't be original, but might be better than getting a cracked, dried-out, nick-up piece of driftwood, which is what I see most of on EBay

I have a complete and functional and very good condition #5 in 7mm that I was going to scrap for the action.  Wood is good, rifling is excellent, etc.  I think it even has the original ramrod.

If you swap the wood, it will not fit very well, as these are somewhat individual.

I might be open to swapping the entire project rifle plus some cash for your action.  But, it would require an FFL on both ends.  I get about $100 for the stocks on ebay, about $30 for the metal hardware, $25 for the sight, and usually $110 to $125 for an excellent barrel.  It might not seem like a very good deal to you, but I would swap the complete rifle for a complete action, providing it's not pitted and is in good condition without being gouged up or the screws buggered, for $250 difference, including postage.  I would also sell the wood and hardware for $125 shipped, if you just want the wood for your action.  But, it might not fit well.

If you're interested, I can get into the safe and give a detailed description, as I'm going from memory.  I do know that this one is a bit too good to tear down, but I'm not a military relic shooter!  It sits in the safe waiting a decision on what to do, along with the John Wayne BATJAC rolling block.

Dave, what I have is a complete rifle, including its original buttstock, with great bore, action in clean condition, no buggered screws.  What bothers me about it is that at one time the buttstock split between the tangs and spread open sideways a bit.  Someone must've tried to fix it by putting glue in the crack but didn't clamp it as it dried.  They also put in a couple wood screws which they covered up with some kind of filler.  What I've done is to re-split the stock, removed the old glue and the screws, re-glued it and put in two wood dowels to firmly hold the stock together and clamped it back to its original width while it dried.  Then I stained the dowel ends to match the stock.  So now its fully functional and doesn't look too bad, but if I could get a non-repaired stock for a reasonable price, I'd do it.

I'd sure hate to see a rifle in as good a condition as yours to be pieced out for parts.  Send me an e-mail and we can talk some more.

Tom,

I'll drop you an email from home later.

Also, I noticed that there's two lots of #5 stocks on ebay at the moment.  One looks to be as bad or worse than what you have, one appears to be in fair condition, but looks like a lot of wear on it.  Do a search for "rolling block" and they'll come up.

Best of luck,
dave
