Custom Ruger questions.
« on: January 18, 2005, 09:18:03 PM »
I have two Ruger in .45 Colt.
I love the .45 Colt cailber. None better in my humble opinion.
One is a Vaquero, my 'plinking and fun' revolver.
The other a Bisley Blackhawk 7.5", both blue steel.
I have loaded to 'max' according to the manuals and those loads will likely do anything I should ask of a revolver. However, being a bit of a crank I'd like to customize the Bisley Blackhawk.
Who are the better known and reputable smiths that I can trust to replace the cylinder with a 5 shot, strong cylinder, tune the trigger, convert it so the cylinder will turn either way and so forth.
Got any idea how much I should borrow against the house to pay for this?
What custom conversions would you guys recommend?
Do I need to go to the 5 shot cylinder and what do I gain by doing this?
Would it be cheaper to buy a .454 Freedom Arms?
I don't do scopes on revolvers so that's not an option.
Scope belong on rifles, but then I hunt with a bow and custom flintlocks.
Not knocking anyone that scopes handguns.
Been there, done that. Too much junk on a revolver to suit me.
Any suggestions deeply appreciated.
Any idea of turn around time?
Thank you fellas.

of course Linebaugh but the turn around times can vary.  You could call them and see what the current time frame is.  You can get a FA454 Field Grade used for probably just under $1000 to just above.  I bought a Premier that had been shot 15 times for $1200 a few years back.  I will eventually have a 500 built but I love my Freedom Arms.  I would just keep the two 45s and buy a Freedom Arms that way, you already have a good one to build a 500 on one day.  You can buy everything up to that in a FA revolver 454, 475.  You'll eventually want it anyway..

linebaugh bowen and clements all do ex. work. Expect to pay between 1800 and 2300 for a 5 shot gun. depending on options and who does it. You cant go wrong with any of the above.

Look here! http://www.reedercustomguns.com/   Gary does excellent work, wait time is reasonable, and the price is very completive. I have one of his “5 shooters”. It came to me with TWO 5 shot cylinders one in a standard caliber and the other 5 shot cylinder in a wildcat with a Leupold scope mounted. Price IIRC was less than $1600.00 with me supplying the SBH as a platform.
Love those .41s'
