Cleaning guns between stages--do you do it?
« on: February 04, 2003, 04:45:05 AM »
Just wondering if any of the pards do any type of cleaning of the revolvers or long guns between the stages.  If so, to what extent?

The only cleaning I have seen (or done) at a Cowboy match is to a black powder gun, if it gets sticky or stops.  Windex breaks them loose very well, but it is said that Ballistol is excellent for the job.  I now have some, but haven't shot BP yet since.  Last Sunday a shooter was squirting Ballistol into the breech to free up a 73 lifter.  He was shooting Black Powder.

There were two times that I can remember that I had to squirt a little Ballistol on the elevator of my '66.  On a really good weekend I don't even clean between matches!!!   I do squirt'em with a little Ballastol and go again.

I use a dry chamber swab/brush on the chambers of my SXS after I have loaded my pistols and rifle at the loading table.  It is on a pistol length cleaning rod.  I tuck the cleaning rod in the small of my back along with the loading strip before they call "next shooter" to the line.

Since I have been doing this cleaning I have not had any failure to eject both spent shells at the same time.  I open the action and unload by rolling the shotgun a bit to the right and making that brisk rearward movement.  Prior to using the swab I would occasionally have spent shells stick in one or both chambers.

I do not clean any of the other main match weapons between stages.

Most I do is every once't while I'll stick a nose spray bottle filled with water in the muzzle of my Henry and pump once.  Other than that I don't clean anything until I get home.

When I am shooting my SxS, I carry a short cleaning rod with a wool mop on it. Every 2-3 stages, I wipe out the chambers with a little Ballistol... same as Pecos Clyde does. It keeps the empties flying out with just a twitch backward. You know you are using proper form if both empties hit the RO squarely in the chest at the same time
