Ruger Security Six
« on: January 19, 2005, 05:24:30 AM »
I just purchased this revolver and was wondering if anyone could enlighten me about this 357 mag.  I know nothing about the security six, but this seems to be a real well made revolver.
Thanks
Jeff

It really is a pretty nice revolver. I'm certainly not known as being a Ruger fan by any stretch of the imagination but that is one of Ruger's better guns in my opinion. The Redhawk is more or less an upsized version of it.

8) Very nice revolver.  IMHO, the trigger pull can be modified to be much smoother than the GP-100.  There seem to be more of these guns in the Louisiana/Mississippi area than anywhere else.  If memory serves, the old Howard Brothers chain acquired a large quantity at a good price, and sold them pretty cheap.

Ruger Security Six!

The Security Six, is one of the finest medium frame revolvers ever made!  It was introduced by Ruger in 1971!  It is slightly larger than an S&W K-frame!  It is one of the strongest revolvers ever made(For it's size)!

Unlike the old time "Hammer & forged" gun technology(Like S&W and Colt)the security six was made from cast steel(Not, cast iron=cast iron is weak and cast steel is strong!)and, this simplified production costs!  Also, unlike S&W(Which was originally designed for cops to train with(Using .38 special's and only to shoot .357 magnum's occassionally!)Ruger designed the Security Six(From the ground up)to withstand the constant shooting of .357 magnum's!

Also "Unique" in revolver manufacturing(Increasing frame strength)was the modular construction of the Security Six(And, later Six Series revolvers:  Service Six, and Speed-Six)for tool free takedown(For cleaning or for inspection)!

The Security Six, has proven itself in service(All around the world)in police departments(Etc.)to be one tough(And, reliable!)revolver!  It has one of the finest service records(With an extremely low incidence of needing to be sent back to the factory for repairs!)!

The only negative usually heard about the Security Six, is that the trigger is not as good as on the older S&W's!  This is true!  But, just shooting these guns will break the trigger in, to feel much better!  and, if you add a Bullseye(Or, Wolff)spring kit, the trigger pull, can be very nice, indeed!

The solid frame construction, is also nice(Aside from having greater strength)because there are no sideplate screws to shoot loose!

In summary:  The Security Six, is one tough and rugged sixgun!  It can be disassembled in just a few minutes for cleaning and/or inspection!  It is much stronger than the S&W K-frames!  Yet, it handles as easily as the S&W K-frame!  For it's size, it is virtually bullet proof!  During it's production run(1971 through 1985)Ruger had sold more than two million of these "Fine" revolvers!  This proves just how popular these guns were!

You have a wonderful and reliable revolver-enjoy it!  It will outlive you!

I was in my favorite gunshop today, and a guy came in with a fairly pristine model of the Security Six, he wanted to trade or sell it because it was too heavy for his "little woman", and he was right, she was tiny.  The incredible part was that this guy had bought the gun from a "good friend", who sold him this used gun for a measly.......(wait for it)...........FIVE HUNDRED FIFTY DOLLARS!   I spit soda all over the counter when he told me what he paid for it.  My gun dealer and I gently told him that it was a fine revolver, but he might want to renegotiate that deal!  That's about twice what a normal gun would go for around here, I hope you didn't get a "deal" like that!  When he found out he could get a new GP-100 in stainless for a lot less than he paid for his used treasure, he was a tad upset.  I hope I don't read about him in the papers anytime soon, he was pretty peeved.  Caveat Emptor!

Papajohn, that is about 3 times what I gave for this one. This revolver has some bluing wear but is otherwise real tight!! Appears that it was toted more than it was shot!! Man, that guy needs some new freinds!!!
I am going to shoot it this weekend!

I bought one in SS many years ago, kept it a while, and sold it to a friend of mine. He kept it until this past summer, when he got in a tight and needed some cash. I bought it back from him at the price he asked (my son said I was robbing him) and think I'll keep it. That's the second gun I've bought back..... I gotta learn to keep them....

Right after Christmas, in January.

Blued, worn a bit at the muzzle and on certain parts of the cylinder, but shoots like a dream.  Handles well, has the rubber pachmayr's on it.

I'm looking for, or considering making, some combat wood grips for it.  I'm currently reading Sixguns by Keith and No Second Place Winner by Jordan, and they've got me thinking combat wood (smooth) grips.

Sixes are hard to find any modern grips for, w/o finger grooves.

Good luck and enjoy your Ruger!  I know I am - and am pricing Blackhawks, Vaqueros, and other Rugers - perhaps an SP101 or MKII in .22lr, or a Single Six/Bearcat in .22lr/.22wmr

[Edit] forgot, I only paid $189.00 for mine... [/Edit]

I have a stainless 4" barrel model.  I was wondering if there is a scope mount made to fit these.  Was thinking of tree stand deer hunting with it, but my eyes would not be good enough to use the open sights.

Do you guys know of a factory load using 180gr in the 357?  Who has used theirs for dder?  What loads did you use?  I'm talking 50yds or less here.

I've had my Stainless Sec 6 for a long time. Love it, especially with 38 wadcutters. Now that I have the Hogue grips on it, it fits me really well. I think this is the gun I can shoot most accurately of all my hand guns. Love its ruggedness.  I've taken a few rabbits and grouse with it too.

Can't speak to deer hunting with it.  Mine is a 4 incher too but I would be a little concerned about power loss with an already marginal round.

Scope mounts - I'm not sure but B Square may make one - B Square doesn't get high marks on the GB forums but they may be your only option unless you want to have the top strap drilled and tapped.

180 gr loads. - I think Federal makes a 180 gr cast core hunting load. Seems like a good load.  I've run a few through my gun and have carried them when I was packing this gun in bear country.

I have owned 3 of these, all bought used, and I think they are among the best revolvers Ruger ever made. You really can't go wrong.

They seemed a little too large for me to easily conceal, but that is the only "fault" I have ever found with one.

They are usually available for a good (cheap) price, and will last forever.

Enjoy it.

I've owned my Ruger security six since '76 and it has served me very well my only complaint about Rugers is their grips they suck.  I just put pachmayr presentation grips on all of my Rugers and then they fit me.  The only other thing i did with my Rugers to smooth out the actions is to lube them up with moly and its a different gun.  It smooths them out and lessens the trigger pull too.  I own all Rugers and nothing else.  BigBill

All i did to the action is on the ball end of the spring rod that goes to the trigger was to stone it smooth its just a stamped piece and its rough. Then just moly up the whole thing and hold it pointing down with no trigger spring and run the action with the trigger to work in the moly.  Then install the spring and after a month i moly it up again and thats it.  My trigger on my 76 security six is better than the one my python had.

I have a security six with a 3" python barrel, hammer spur removed, action smoothed, crane detent added, grip rounded, and entire gun polished and reblued. Something different, most people have to look at least twice to identify it.
Shoot straight , shoot often.

My friend has a 6" barreled sec 6 . He got an action job and its as smooth as any python out there. Plus unlike the Python you can use your sec 6 for a hammer if the need should arise. hehehe.Seriously Ruger makes a very rugged handgun. But theres sometihng about the newer Ruger models that just dont seem to balance very well, thats why I think the Security 6 was the best DA Revolver the have made thus far. I do dearly love my Single Six (6" barrel and fixed sights) Its usually on my hip while I fish with 3 22 mag shot shells and 3 .22 mag 48 grain hollow points (to take care of any snake or daranged possom, coon or dog that may want shooting). Plus like all Rugers its accurate. Beyond the fine Ruger single actions ,Ruger just isnt my personal favorite. But theres nothing wrong with them, you'll never be outgunned. You might want to look into getting an action Job,pull on the action of a gun thats been "worked on" and you will quickly see what I am talking about.
