how's this sound for a medium range deer gun(300 yds)/cyote gun.
stainless 24'' .270 barrel, bushnell 3-9x50 3200, and surviver stock/forend?

Sounds like more than you need to me for a combo gun. The 25-06 would be better on the varmint end and more than enough on the deer end as well.

You cannot get a 24" barrel in 270 in the Handi, by the way. A 26" barrel is available in the 25-06

You can get a 23" barrel in the 270 though if you order it as an Ultra :wink:

How about a 24" .243 bull barrel with synthetic stocks? Or maybe a 26" .280? There is a 7mm bullet designed for anything you want to hunt. And you guys want more chamberings... cripe it's too difficult to decide on a caliber now. :-D

I'll agree with what you want except for that ...arrrrg...Survivor stock...you had best actually hold one and shoot one before you settle on it...and all the caliber choices are good...now...by all means don't let me talk you out of getting a Survivor...cause if you do...just get it in 308 with the bull barrel...and I'll trade you a never fired 22" 270 barrel for the 308 bull barrel...and heck...I'll even throw in a box of 140 grain Hornady Lght Magnum factory ammo for you... :wink:

The .270 would probably make a great 300 yd deer gun, but if you're shooting coyotes for fur, it's probably way to much. I've heard that even the .243 does a job on their hides. I wonder if the 7mm-08 might doing a good job filling both roles.

If you're saving the fur, there is no such thing as a 300yd deer rifle that will not do undo damage to the fur of a coyote.

I dropped a coyote at 250 with my 243 and it left a 2" hole.

I shot a coyote with my .243 in the fall. All I had was a head shot I could take. Lets just say a 55gr. BT Nosler will make a mess of things :sniper:

I believe I would go 25-06 if I had to pick one to do both. Neighbor has one in Ruger m77. It tears the heck out of coyote but will do it at 400yds. They won't let you hunt deer with a rifle in IL. My neighbor as gone to Wisonsin and killed deer with it though.

If you reload then I'd suggest you make your choice based on what would work well for the deer rifle and a caliber that has FMJ bullets readily available. Load fmj for yotes and standard bullets for deer. Course if you want one load to do all then the .243 makes sense as well as large holes in coyotes.

Truly, I don't think there is an ideal deer/coyote cartridge even though there are plenty that will serve for both.

At the price of these handi guns you would be as well off to get a deer caliber anywhere from .243 on up to '06 and then add a coyote barrel in .204 or .223. Additional investment is only 110 to 150 depending on scope choice :grin:
