This Hog was taken off the family ranch in Medina County, TX a few miles from Hondo & Castorville where the Hog hunt is being organized.

Great country for hogs!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

That's a fine looking pig.  I sure like hunting that country down there.  I'm putting together a trip for late April to my usual area near Medina.  Hopefully I can add a couple more hogs to the freezer.

Thanks DR.

We usually go back for Easter as well. I've had better luck then with getting a good eater because there isn't the hunting pressure from the Deer hunting that there is during Thanksgiving. The sows and their little ones are easier to pattern during daylite hours then.

This big fella was used for ground meat...you could smell his musty scent before you saw him. My brother in-law took one about 50lbs less the same nite. He was good eatin'...we did ribs & chops on the smoker the day before we headed home.

Unfortunately, this April I have been informed by the boss that we will be taking our 5 year old to Disney and not visiting the family in San Antonio.

I was however given the go ahead to setup a solo trip before then, if I wanted too.  :-D  I've been working up 45-70 hand loads for my Marlin 1895 just for that occasion.

A 6.5x55?  Wow, I usually use at least .30 caliber bullets. - and preferably my .375H&H Mag. :)

Actually, of the three of us who still hunt hogs on this particular 450 acre family plot, noone uses a 30 cal.

We use 270, 7m-08, and my old 6.5 x 55.

This March or April I hope to change that by using my Marlin 1895 in 45-70  :-D

I'm currently working up loads using the Sierra 300gr bullets with RE 7.

I also use a 6.5x55 for hogs. This is primarily from stands over bait. I do not use it on stalks in heavy cover. The old 6.5 is a excellent hog (or deer) stopper when the shot is good.  I've never had one make it out of my eyesight. I much prefer a .30 or larger on a stalk when the possibility of a confrontation with an enraged tusker or PO'ed momma sow could arise at close range.

I'm with you. We have several box stands set-up over corn feeders. Some have fencing around them for Deer only. Others are open to all critters. I like my Marlin 1895 for stalking or when on the ground. I've danced around the mesquite tree a couple times with a surprised Hog.
