M-15 with a 6" M-19 barrel
« on: January 19, 2005, 03:33:36 PM »
I've been wanting a 19 w/ a 6" barrel. My brother has a 15 he'll sell me for $200.00. Does anyone think it would be practicle/feasible to install a 6" 19 barrel on this revolver, IF I can find one?
P.S. Where would I look? Thanx for your feedback. jd45.
P.P.S. Could I do it myself or would I need to let a smith handle the job?

It would be possible to contact S&W for a bbl. they used to sell them but it has been a number of years since I bought a bbl from them. Some gunsmiths may have some the conversion of putting a Colt Python bbl on a Smith K frame was pretty popular some time ago before Smith came out with the L frame underlug. A gunsmith would have to do the conversion for you. The bbl has to be set back to come to top dead center on the frame and then the bbl has to be faced off to allow for the proper cylinder gap and then the throat on the bbl has to be recut. It is not work for the inexperienced. Jerry J

jd - if you want a M19 with a 6" bbl find one for sale and buy it.  There are probably a lot of blue steel versions availalbe.  If you can only find a 4" the call S&W and see if they will rebarrel the 4" to a 6" if they have the 6" bbl.

Be advised S&W will not consider rebarrelling a 38 caliber revolver with a 357 magnum caliber bbl - that is either illegal for them to do or against their company policy.  I think most reputable gunsmiths would feel the same.  Can you imagine someone picking up that revolver, trying to stuff a couple of 357s into the cylinder because the barrel says 357 magnum, and having the gun come apart in the face and hands - far too much liability.

Look for the Model 19, find one, and have S&W work it over for you - they do a great job.  HTH.  Mikey.

I guess I fail to see the purpose in all of this. First no I doubt the barrel would mate up properly. The model 19 is made enough different it would look ridiculous if you got it on there. It still wouldn't make it a .357 Magnum if that is what you're thinking.

The model 15 is as best as I recall nothing but the model 14 with a 4" barrel. With 6" and 8-3/8" barrels it was a model 14 and with a 4" it was a model 15. So a 6" model 14 barrel would fit and work fine but would require a gunsmith to do the job to make sure it is set up correctly.

Why not just buy a model 14 with 6" barrel and be done with it? Or if you want a .357 Mag get a model 19.

M15 w/ 6" M19 barrel

Thanx, guys.............I guess the best advice is to just get a 19 with a 6" barrel, which is really what I want. I'd like to see if I could snag an older model with the recessed chambers to allow the cartridge rims to sit flush with the rear face of the cylinder. I'd mostly use it for punching paper with mild target loads, tho It'll be nice to have the magnum capability should I want to go that route down the road. Thanx again, jd45.
