Hope everyone votes  . This will help me narrow down all these calibers to just a few so I can pick one for me to buy. Note that most shots will be in open areas.

10-400 yards, wow, that's a heck of a range  :) . My vote went w/ the .270 (regardless that I actually own a .243...wouldn't recommend it as a deer caliber to someone just getting a gun). And by the way, it's .257 Roberts, not 275. Just so ya kno.  :D

uh huh sure you are. You know we believe you. But just to clarify would you tell us how many deer you've taken so far at 400 yards? OK they how man ground hogs at a measured 400 or over? Hmmm. I see. OK.

I can't really think of a reason why anyone would have to shoot at a deer 400 yards away.

Gray Beard, I have shot 3 deer from the same spot witch is 375 yards. I killed my first buck this year from that spot. I have also took several groundhog at arround 400 yards with the .22-250. I don't think you realize that I have been shooting far distances scince I was 7, that makes 8 years. At first my shots were tairable at that far but now they are pretty good. I can hit a milk jug ez. Note all of the shots I took on game at that far were from a really firm rest.

I'm trying to remember what was the farthest shot I ever had at a deer here in Pa.

I'll bet it was every bit of 50 yards.

Then I had to drag it a half mile out of the woods.  (Thats why they call it hunting)

However, I do know about much longer shots.  Some approaching 300 yds across a river and half way up the opposite hill with a Remington .308.  Took 4 shots but it went down.

I shot Raccoons, Groundhogs and Coyotes at longer distances than any deer, but then I like getting close.  Like with Turkeys.

hunting with a rifle is almost cheating to us Ohio boys. my lord, if i could have a .270 i could get a deer damn near once a week.

instead i have to settle for a crappy slug gun good to about 75 yards IF i have a scope and a rest and can find the right brand of slugs.

i would say my longest shot is every bit of a whole 50 yards or so here in the buckeye state.

screw this, i am moving somewhere warm where they will let me use my rifles. lol

Reason, from this tower you can see over 300 yards of beans and alfalfa in three different directions, most productive stand I have, over 25 deer so far.

Shortest shot to date
5 yards (straight down from tree stand)

I don't find it to be a real task to get closer than 100 yards from a deer, so my favorite calibers aren't on the poll. When I'm not using a shotgun or a muzzleloader, my favorite centerfire is the .223.
By the way, I find shooting out to 300 yards or so ridiculously easy with my .22-250. I don't reccomend either for beginners, though.

I didn't vote in the poll because I don't shoot 400 yds.

Perhaps you should have offered "I don't shoot that far", and "none of the above" choices as well.

My longest shot was about 215 yds last year, but my other deer that week was taken at about 6 feet.  I once shot a bear at 150yds, but other than that I may have only had 2 or 3 shots as far as 100 yds.

My favourite cartridge, by the way, is the .358 Winchester.

My furthest shot was 326 yds, using a 7mm Mag,.. dropped it right where it was shot.   8)  I have practiced up to 300 yds quite regularly. I wouldn't recommend it to people not practiced to those distances.

Was the furthest shot I had ever taken hunting a Whitetail deer   or anything for that matter.

I just checked a computer program I have (Microsoft Streets & Trips) to see where you are.   If it is correct, you live up in Susquehanna County, just south of the NY border.  In the snow & ice section of the Endless Mtns.

I am down nestled between the Lehigh Valley and the Poconos around the Ski area of the Blue Mtn, probably about an hour or so down the Turnpike from where you are.   I am about 65 miles north of Philly and approximately 90 miles due west of New York City as the crow flies.

I like your area of the state, I wouldn't mind having a few acres up your way.  Getting crowded down here.

Deerslayer15,

I grew up in WV and hunt Lewis Co. every year.   I killed my first deer at age 14 with a 243 handloaded with 100gr. Remington PSPCLs.  I have never had a problem taking deer.  I will readily admit that ALL of my deer kills have been inside 200 yards, most were less than 100.  I chose the 30-06 since it would be my one gun, thick or thin, close or far, factory or handloads, etc. that I'd choose hands down for any deer any place.  I have used a 280 for two years now and have grown rather fond of it.  I don't shoot out to 400 yards, but the cartridge is capable of it even if I'm not.  If you don't handload, a 270,30-06, or 308 would serve you for any deer.  I say that since I am not sure of the availability of 7MM-08 or 280 ammo in your area.  If available, then those two would serve you just fine.  I handload my centerfire ammo and worry less about velocity and more about consistant accuracy and game performance.  Good luck.

Snow and ice section, I like that :) . Mercury right now is hanging at zero to -1 bbrrrr. But yes, you are right. Susquehanna county aka redneckville :-D . So you're out by the Lehigh/Pocono area? I went down to White Haven (which is near Lehigh if I'm not mistaken) to go whitewater rafting.  :D

I hunt just south of White Haven, in the Gorge which you rafted through.  Sometimes I'll stand on a cliff overlooking the river with my rifle on my shoulder, watching the rafters.....  'Deliverance'  style     I'm sure it gives some of them city slickers from NYC something to talk about when they get home.

Sometimes I'm amazed at what people think is whitewater.  Most of the time it's just a trickle coming out of Francis Walter.  Not only that but the shoreline is eroding where the slickers decide to got out of the rafts and 'eat lunch'.

I saw some amazing stuff whitewater rafting. My one friend fell out of the raft, twice in the same trip  :) . Where we did stop for lunch, it was kinda nice to jump in the water on a warm spring day which I did several times. It was so calm there, you could just do that. I actually went down there twice and the second time did class 2 and 3 rapids. Oh boy those were awesome :P . :D

Sorry deerslayer, we kinda got off the topic a lil bit. I won't do it anymore

Actually the other forum I was on that lashed alot was On The North American Hunters forum(there were some good guys, but most just wanted to cut ya down). And to think you have to be a member to post. Paid 12 dollars for a year and don't even go to the place :-D

Everyone check out my new avatar, It is a pic. of a Rem. model 700 mountain rifle LSS. This is the rifle I have choosen. Now all I have to do is choose the caliber and make the money. :-D

And no, this what we're in right now is a thread (aka topic) and this is a Remington FORUM. GBO is a host (aka web site) that hosts the forums. Well, that's good to hear that you like this site. I should go on to that other site you're talkin about and lash out at a few of them and see how they like it.  :) . Since obviously, they haven't heard of diginity.  :D

Here is what I think. You are choosing a caliber based on a poll, and I believe you have absolutely no experience with it. You also said on another thread you didn't want to use a .30-06. Well, I hate to be the one to tell you, but there ain't one lick of difference in performance between the two in the field. Both will kill deer farther than anyone has any business shooting, and they kick about the same.
BTW, the "popular" choice in guns, or any other aspect of life is not "always" the best. Just look at the crap that gets the highest ratings on television.
