Good rifle, decent scope, great cartridge. If you find a good load for it and practice you will be set up for any critter you care to hunt with a few notable exceptions.

Here is what I think. You are choosing a caliber based on a poll, and I believe you have absolutely no experience with it. You also said on another thread you didn't want to use a .30-06. Well, I hate to be the one to tell you, but there ain't one lick of difference in performance between the two in the field. Both will kill deer farther than anyone has any business shooting, and they kick about the same.
BTW, the "popular" choice in guns, or any other aspect of life is not "always" the best. Just look at the crap that gets the highest ratings on television.
My :money:

I am almost sure I said that I didn't want to use the 30-06 cause of the damage it did to the last deer I shot with one. Then somebody explained to me that it only did so much damage cause I hit a bone. So I decided that the 30-06 wasn't so bad.
As far as not having any experience with one....well your wrong I didn't tell you guys(only told fish through pm) I shot one like a week ago. And I like the way it shot at 250 yards, and I have been on the internet reasearching  the .270 for a few weeks. I dicided what gun I wanted befor I ever ran this poll. I only did this to see what everyone else liked.

So nexted time please get the facts befor you asume somethin.

One thing to remember bout the .270 is the fact that it's picky in ammo. Besides buying the gun and scope, you're going to have to go through several boxes of different manufactured ammo (Remington, Winchester, Federal, Hornady, etc.) and even then, there are bullet variations (Scirocco Bonded, Core Lokt, Premier Core Lokt, Accubond, Nosler Partition, AccuTip, etc, etc) to find the ammo that's most accurate for your gun. And trust me, that will start to add up. So actually, not to jump the gun, next step might be after you get all set up is to start hanging out in the reloading forum and start that too. Ah, we'll worry bout that later. Good luck with the gun (you lucky lil rascal you)  :D

Now, now, be nice. We don't have to type everything politically correct here, now do we? That's the blessed thing bout the 'Internet'.

Even though it's important not to loose the grasp of typing correctly, the forums and chat rooms are the place just to let it hang out. If ya don't type it gramatically correct, my 60 year old English teacher isn't gonna walk up behind you and whap you one then say, "THAT HAS TO BE CAPITALIZED!!!" :D   :-D

Don't let it get you down. Many forget that they were once young and learning. The difference is that when I was young I did not have the internet to do research. I had to depend on gun and hunting magazines and gun shop bull shooters.
I shot a 30-06 for 12 years and killed a pile of deer with it. Damage and killing effectivness is a function of bullet selection in most calibers, not just the 30-06. With your .270 you will have to find those sweet loads that are both deadly and accurate. One advantage of the .270 is that it is VERY popular and there is no shortage of fine bullets, factory loads and opinions on bullet weights and loading.
As soon as you can invest in a reloading set up and start crafting your own loads. It is cheaper and there is a certain joy in shooting your own loads.
I applaud you for researching and asking questions BEFORE taking the plunge. If you ask questions about your ammo choices you may save some $$$$ in that quest as well.
The Remington is a fine rifle and the .270 has what it takes for most, if not all major North American game animals.

Good Luck

Fish,

Are you refering to a 270 WSM or a Winny when you wrote "bout the the .270 is the fact that it's picky in ammo"?

I've got a 270 Winchester and so have many of my hunting friends and none are "picky".  As matter of fact more than half of 270 Win. I've seen will put most any 130 140 or 150 grain bullet to the same point of impact at 100 yards.  I can't say the same for any other caliber but the 270 Winchester!  270 winchesters are not generally "picky in ammo".

Deer Slayer,

Congrads on your choice of rifle and cartridge.  Together they should make an excelent deer rifle that can last a life time!

Good luck and good hunting!

Ray,

My one hunting buddy in deer camp had a Ruger M77 in .270. He told me he had to go through Remington, Winchester, Federal and the gun finally like Hornady's. Sounds picky to me  . Maybe that's just a one gun case.  :? Oh well. Sorry to throw ya off deerslayer.  :D

I have only shot two different factory loads through my .270  Federal $ Remington(130's)...When I switched from Federal to Remington...Hit the same place...Fish,dont always go by what one person said to be true...there are alot more factors in gun accuracy.

#1, and don't assume wut u do is right either. Now that Mr. Sendero has made it clear that obviously I was wrong in my statement, then that case must have been a 'case' deal. I think I might have read something bout the .270's accuracy having to do with it. But I guess I'm wrong.

Yes yes yes, I was joking. If I were serious, you'd know it.

Flintlock I think you got sumtin goin w/ the Federal's. I was gonna try the Nosler Partitions in my .243 this year but, well, it just didn't happen. So deerslayer, I guess regardless that the .270 is accurate, you should try different ammo anyway. You got enough $$$.  :)  :D

Deer Slayer,

Suggest you include the old standard Remington CoreLokts in your ammo tests.  Bet the CLs have killed more deer in US than any other bullet! - The 130s are good deer loads, the 150s are good for hogs.  Both usually prove to be very accurate in the 270 and can be found on sale for less the $10 per box.  At that price they make good practice ammo (you can shoot more!).  I reload for the 270 Winchester and have found the 130s to make a good low cost practice load.  So I shoot'em a lot.

You have me confused, I have looked through the post and I don't see anywhere that GB said any thing about spell checking :?

And about the 400 yards.....please.....don't start that again. I know I can shoot that far and that is all that matters.....So please don't start that on again   :D

Half_inch,

Sometimes when ya talk on the Internet (a lot) sometimes ya tend to put down 'u' in substitute for 'you'. Dunno if ya kno that, figgered I'd let ya have the scoop on that. Lots of lil code words like that. Not necessarily spelling errors, just shortcuts. :D

Of course I've seen the baby talk conversation brought to the internet from people mature enough to know how to spell and type.

IMO, Some should know better in conversations about Firearms.

We aren't discussing Cherry Pies here.  The case at hand is just an example.   Certainly not unique.
