What type of bullets do you guys use most?

I've watched this forum for a while and I'm wondering what types of bullets you guys use, grooved or smooth. I've been having some luck with the Lyman Gould HP after sizing it down to .452 in a Lee sizer die and I'm wondering if anyone else does similar things or have you all gone the custom mould route. I find that if the bullets are .452 and I patch them with 16# layout paper, I can still shoot them without running the patched bullet through the die again. 3" groups so far from my Marlin 1895 22", the groups will probably get better if I ever defile that pretty rifle with a scope.

I started out using a Lee, 405 grain RNFP, sized to 0.452 and had good luck with it. Like you, 3 inch groups were common. Ordered a custom Hoch mould and now patch a smooth, 0.452 bullet, patched up with 16# paper.

I size conventional bullets. Try casting them out of pure lead and sizing to a larger diameter. I size to .454" in a LEE push thru sizer and patch with 9 lb. onionskin. If you size with a lubrisizer, you will distort a soft slug too much.

I don't cast my paper patch bullets, because I want pure swaged lead straight or parallel sided cup base bullets. I use a .451 dia bullet I get my paper from the art supply section at Wal-Mart using Mead Tracing Paper, it works and not bad priced at 40 sheets for $1.97

Joe
were do you get that 100% 9lb cotton paper? what is the trade name?
My bale of 20% coppy paper is running low. and how thick is it?
I swage to .448 and .449 with the other die. I like my finished patch at .452-4

My paper needs to be.0015 for my bullets I use. I been looking for some 9 lb. 100% cotton. The 100% does not shred as easy.

I got a roll of the paper from:
http://www.suppliesnet.com/
I think it's made by Seth-Cole and it's about 6.00 for a 150 foot roll.

Isn't it funny how just about any topic on this forum eventually ends up in a discussion of paper - which to use, where to find it and what it costs?! Just a simple observation.

Well with a PP bullet the paper is a important component. One goes with the other.
In my location the paper I use I cant find in the office supply stores or places like Wallmart. I find paper that is close in dimensions but only 20 or 25% cotton.
My load performs best with 1.5 thousands thick 100% cotton paper patched .002-.003 over bore diameter.
The 20% paper comes out like falling snow but the 100% most generally is in 3 or 4 large pieces with no evidence of gas cuts.
So it is important for me at least to find the proper paper which is just important as the bullet used. I think any way.

i had a win. trapper in 45 colt, that refused to shoot! i scoped it for load development. it would shoot three inch groups at 50 yards! i tried all kinds of bullets. then boiled the lube off of some 300gr. 44 mag bullets. to paper patch them, and it shot one inch groups! the range officer called it a confetti gun, as it poofed paper, when i shot it. he had a cow while i was explaining how i was using 44 mag bullets in a 45 colt gun. he got the picture.

coopershooter, you just made my jaw drop. If someone asked me if you could shoot a pp 45LC I would have said no cause you have to have a death grip roll crimp for proper pressure in the LC and to prevent bullet movement in a tube feeder! Also I have listed a .44 mould on ebay and I will have to ship it out on Monday!! I would have kept it for sure! UGH!!. Please email me or post here for info. signed ...perplexed.....JB

I had a post in mind in comment to the remark about all threads ending up in a discussion of paper. But the .45LC sent me reeling! Here goes. I thought that the suitability of the paper used had more to do with the rifling of the individual barrel than the cotton content and such. The fact that the paper should remain on the bullet to the end of the trail or leave the premisis a few feet from the barrel seems to have much to do with the sharpness of the cutting edge of the rifling, the depth of the rifling and the barrel more than the composition of the paper. Also the thickness of the paper chosen has everything to do with it's thickness X4 compared to the height of the rifling. Isn't recomending one paper over another like touting a favorite load for one gun to work other different guns? I find I am questioning what I think I know. Not a bad thing all in all. JB
