You talk about skinny looking deer. You're lucky to have a 45-70 to knock them over, eh? You sure the 45-70 is big enough for those animals?

Nice pictures my style of hunting, shooting out of the upstairs bed room window at deer feeding in the apple orchard 50 yards away. Then tell the wife to get up and gut the deer.

Yes..the deer down here are a srawny lot...dress out about 60 to 70 pounds...there are biggies though but they don't get that big by being stupid enough to walk out on a virtual prarrie on a rifle range!! :-D

Story: Had been shooting for about an hour or so at 100 yard berm...the deer came out behind the berm and trotted toward the firing line all in single file!! When they got even with the line (less than 50 yards!) I slowly walked over to my truck and got my camera..we were up wind from them and they just stood there when they got a whiff of us...I shot a couple pic's and then the ole white flags went up and they bolted off....I don't know why we have such small deer in this area..there are BIG deer in certain parts of Texas but not down here...most look like greyhounds with big floppy ears... :-D My old lease had a bunch of spikes on it too...some pretty large bucks but poor antlers....

P.S. that form is from low center of gravity caused by dun-lap-disease.........de belly is done lapped way over the belt buckle....

Fred....sounds like you got um trained right....now what is your phone number and what is your wifes name?

Great story Deadeye! Thanks for sharing. Those smaller deer aren't just prevelent in your neck of the woods, I've seen some real small ones in parts of the southeast US. Bag limits per year are several cuz they're so tiny and lots of em, I guess! Not true here, 1 deer per year, but they're a bit bigger.... :wink:

Yup...I could prolly take um out ok with the 45-70....all the way out to 300 yards...the ole Franken-Classic will shoot!! Two widest shots are 8" apart....that is a 6" shoot-n-see...

I kinda figured it was Deadeye when I saw the terrain that was as flat as an ironing board! :eek:

I think we have an antler problem and maybe a size problem because of a shortage of calcium (lime). Bone and antler are both made up of a lot of calcium and neither east Texas sand or coastal black gumbo have much, if any. They may be able to grow boneless and skinless chickens, but I don't think it works well with deer! :roll:

Paul....I was on that lease for about 8 years...we planted about an acre and half lil plot and planted all kinds of crop on it...even put out salt and mineral licks...put out corn right befor the season started....was alot of accorn on the lease too...there was 10 people of the lease and we hunted about 750 acres. Had 9 doe permits and we had ""draw every year to see who got an antlerless .Good size 8 and 10 pointers were take off the lease but were not the norm...most were 4 to 6 point....spikes galore...I took a long shot one year at what I thought was a big doe and was thrilled when it had big ole nubs on it's head....got to fill the doe permit then. I think spikes breed spikes...but minerals does have alot to do with antler quality and size....

Quite true about the minerals not helping much. However, if you go on over to the hill country or farther west, the antlers get larger. I think it's the calcium, which is in much larger quantities than the trace minerals in a salt block. Places where you can grow alfalfa should have deer with larger antlers. (You can't grow alfalfa in east Texas, 'cause there isn't enough lime/calcium in the soil).

I never saw a rock in Brazoria county that wasn't imported, so we obviously didn't have limestone to help the crops. Alvin, home of Nolan Ryan and the record rainfall for the US, is known as the area for ROC (rice, oil and cattle), but not alfalfa. Bay City is probably similar.

Wow, 43"is a lot of rain, but it pales in comparison to the world record 24hr rainfall of 72".....and to keep this on topic, I'd hate to have to shoot a handi in rain like that! :roll:

Your most likely right Paul...although...rice is not what it used to be in Bay City....but your probably correct about the calcium. I went to school in Kerrville and the deer there are (while not monsters) definately larger than in the Halletsville area where my lease was. Weird huh? I've never hunted in West Texas but hear they get pretty big out there...

Good job Quick!

I guess I should tell everyone that Deadeye is down in the part of the world I grew up in. My family and I moved there in 1952 and we didn't move north (deep east Texas) until 1975. One of the main crops on the Gulf coast is rice and Bay City is no exception. There is supposed to be some great goose hunting in the area. :-)

Yup...as a matter of fact...Eagle Lake near Bay City is known as "The Goose Hunting Capital of the World".. and it's no brag either it is a fact!!! You haven't lived till you've heard a THOUSAND SnowGeese get up out of a field early in the morning... :wink: An Unbelievable sound!!! :shock: Here is a few on the highway near my house a couple months ago....

Deadeye -- Boy, does THAT bring back memories! When I was a kid in Wisconsin, we used to drive up to a place called Horicon Marsh; it was the place where I think ALL migratory birds stopped on their way south. There were everything you could think of -- geese, ducks, cranes, and some I'd never seen before or since. But the geese outnumbered them all. I miss those days sometimes...
