Should I get a 45-70 Buffalo or should I spend the extra money for a shilo sharps 45-70 theres about $800 difference in price I just but know if its worth the money or are the BC's good for long range shooting?

There is quite a bit more money spent at Shiloh than you think... The prices you see on the website do not reflect the FET ie Federal Excise Tax so you got to add that on as well.

But huntnut, it all depends on you and your flavor of what you want... you could purchase a Buffalo Classic as a learning tool and then put your minimum down payment on your Shiloh.

Its all in what you want.... either way a Shiloh is still just a copy of the real C. Sharps rifle.

If the only diff were money, it would have to be the BC, of course.

If money does not matter to you or if the Sharps is affordable for you, then by the sharps. The BC may be just fine for long range shooting, but it's just not, IMO, anywhere near the real McCoy. EVen though the Shiloh is not the real mccoy either. :grin:

Some would argue that the Shilo is the most faithful reproduction made today. I understand you can even interchange many parts between a Shilo and an 19th century Sharps.

I've taken the path Montanan has suggested. I have a Shilo on order - 14 month wait and a lot more than $800 more than a BC; and I've bought a BC to play around with. I figure I can learn the ropes on the BC even though I cannot compete in NRA sanctioned BPCR silhouette matches. I also hope to hunt with the BC while the Shilo will be reserved for competition and other fancy pants shoots.

Theres your answer. Buy BOTH!

Now el_rey_lobo After you get your Shiloh, use your BC as a teaching tool for others that you take to the range. I bought an original 76 action Remington Rolling Block which I have posted pictures on the forum before.

Two years ago i had the dough to buy the Shiloh but could not lay my hands on one. I went to my local guy and ordered a Navy Arms 1885 Win High Wall replica. I'm completely satisfied with it. I've found any number of modern and BP loads that shoot great. I drag it through the woods on hunts with no concern for scratches or scrapes.

Would it compete with the sharps and other long range sillouette winners?
I don't know! I don't shoot those matches and am probably not up to the skill of those who do!

If you go for the Navy gun (about 800) don't waste your money on the tang sight system. It's junk! If you want tang sights get the gun first and then fit it with something tried and true. Montanan can probably give you some good refs on sighting systems. I shoot mine with the factory front and an improved rear ($9.95 from Track of The Wolf). Great results out to 200 meters. From there on it's "fancy pants" sights required

i own both a bc and a sharps and i have to admit the 200 dollar bc with a smith enterprise sight shoots rigth along side the sharps
i can stay on a ten inch plate at 500 yards with either gun if the wind cooperates i figure with a shilo costing around 1500 for basic gun with no sights most of the time. you could buy 4 bc's at the high prices cabelas charges before you spend as much as that one shilo
and another thing to, my sharps is little more finicky abt loads and shooting than the bc
just my two on it

I had a Sharps replica which is all they are. I have a Buffalo classic on the way now. Someone offered me much more than it was worth for the Replica so I don't have it anymore.

I also know what my budget can afford

In my case it's like asking Mercedes SL or Chrysler PT Cruiser ... Sure I'ld like to tool around in a Benz but I can afford the payments on the PT and either will get me from point A to Point B just as well. :wink:
