G2 calibers for deer hunting
« on: January 21, 2005, 01:28:13 PM »
I bought a new G2 contender carbine with a 45-70 barrel on it. I have not fired it yet but ist a nice light little carline. I am sort of overloaded with 45-70 right now as I have a Buffalo classic and a Handi rifle boith in 45-70. I am wondering what a good pistol caliber for the G2 would be. I used to shoot the contender in 35 Remington but I have not seen that barrel listed for the G2. I need a bit of range as my deer hunting is on the SD prairies. Any good ideas?
shot placement is everything.

If you handload, you will have trouble doing better than a 7-30 for deer without going to a wildcat cartridge. Load it up with spirepoints you are good for deer out to 200 with the right load. Recoil is low and it is just fun to shoot. You should still be able to get 35 rem if you look around some (I'd try Ed's), but I would still recommend the good old 7-30.

I second the 7-30 Waters...I've been researching that round and it seems like one of the best calibers offered for the G2 Contender to handle deer sized animals.

Another great one is the 30/30 Ackley improved. It will come close to the 309 JDJ and Midway has the 14" on sale for 195.00 and lee dies for 24.00. Ronny

ditto on the 30-30Ackley Improved 8)  great caliber!.....and you can still shoot factory 30-30 ammo thru it to hunt with or form cases.

there are a lot of wildcat calibers out there that would be great. the JDJ's and/or Bower cartridges come to mind.
