Swiss powder versus Goex
« on: January 21, 2005, 08:53:21 PM »
I though I would share some of my recent experience using Swiss BP. After all the hoopla about how much better Swiss powder is than Goex, I couldn't wait to get my hands on some to try in my muzzleloading slug gun and Sharps rifle. First I tried it in a .45 cal muzzleloader behind 420 and 500 gr bullets. By the way here we are talking about 1 1/2 fg Swiss versus 2fg Goex. Surprisingly the Goex didn't foul or cake as bad as the Swiss. Accuracy was about the same with both. Then over the past few weeks I have been testing loads using Swiss 1 1/2 fg and Goex 4FA in my 45-90 Sharps. ( 4 FA is not a missprint, it is a little more coarse than Goex 1fg) Guess which one burns the cleanest?? Goex fouling stayed soft and easily wiped out of the barrel while Swiss caked up and came out as hard flakes. Accuracy was about equal for both. By volume--Goex 4 FA was a little heavier than Swiss, 62 grs versus 63-64 grs. So my next question would be, is Swiss worth the money?? ($22.00 lb versus $12.00 lb for Goex) Not from my personal experience. Years ago I got a bag of black blasting powder---it's about as coarse as 4 FA but has been tumbled more and has round granule that are heavily graphited. Eventually I tried it in my 45 2 7/8 Sharps and a 45-70-500 with amazing results--it was very accurate and fairly clean. When it ran out, the next best thing was Goex 4 FA. Today I shot the best BP loads from my 45-90 so far using the coarse powder behind 550 gr PP. I have shot lbs of 2ffg without the level of consistency or accuracy. Has any body else tried black blasting powder in a bpcr?

Never have went the blasting powder route. I've had good luck with the Swiss in my muzzleloader and 45-70 both. There is quite a price difference, one can just about buy 2lbs of Goex for the price of one Swiss. Plus availability, around here you'll find Goex quicker than Swiss.

Last Swiss I bought was in Dec '04.  Cost $16.40/lb on my doorstep.  I'm not going to use Goex any more.  I have nothing bad to say about it. The Swiss 1.5 just performs better for me all around.

my test is to fire a group with the powder i need to know which is best for hunting in clean bore..  i shoot five rounds or less if nessesary, observing where  each shot is going at 100 yards.. for me a heavy load of 3fg goex in my old load went to heck after 2 shots and the  first shot was usually  not in the group.. (that means it was pretty bad without a blow tube)..  with 1 1/2 swiss i can shoot 4 or 5 shots and first shot is in the group..  so swiss is best for huntiing in my setup for me..  what matters is in the field or on the paper in each gun,  reloading tecknique, and the purpose that the shooter is looking for.  so youl get a lot of different answers..  good luck dave..

Timber, where'd you get your Swiss?  All the places I have looked had it in the $22-24/lb range.  I went to 3 gunshops yesterday and 2 of them didn't carry real Black at all, cited an additional $4k per year in insurance and everyone using 777 as a reason for not carrying it.  The other place had like 4 cans of 3f Goex and that was it.

Ian,

My last order of powder was to: http://www.powderinc.com/order.htm#goex
Got the powder in 4 days from time of order.  I do believe the unit/lb price was $15.00.  Hazmat and shipping raised that somewhat.  They also sell Goex and it sells for a bunch less.  At any rate, make your thing happen.

Last summer I bought 5 lbs of swiss 1.5 and 5lbs of 2F And worked up several combinations for the .40-70  .40-65 .45-70 and .45-90. I know 10 lbs is not much powder for testing. I also found the fouling a little harder. The velocity was higher, but I found no improvement in the accuracy over my Goex loads. But like I said I only used 10 lbs of the stuff.
I found it was a little faster for finding a exceptable load  for the four calibers I used.
The difference in the cost over Goex I just cant justify it. I got fewer loads from a pound of swiss over Goex.
The last batch of 1F and 2F is very clean burning, the 1F especially burns clean in my .40's and .45's.
I haven't set up my Crony yet to see what the new batch of powder does foe velocity. But at 8.60 a pound it is well worth it compared to swiss that is twice the cost.

zrifleman-I would like to see some velocity figures for this 4F powder. I switched to Swiss sometime back for the 70 & 90 after a good run with Goex.  I don't plan on going back.  Swiss is far superior in velocity, and believe me Goex will have a tough time getting you to 1000 yds.  Last  case from Powder Inc. was $425 delievered in Dec. 04.  Best Regards Steve Witt
