I live in plinking heaven. I get a parade of varmits; skunks, groundhogs, coyotes and other pesky night feeders right out side my workshop back window all hours of the night. It might be from the occassional deer bone or carcass that got dropped there....
When piddling in the shop at night with all manner of projects I can shine a light and get their eyes all the time. I have been experimenting with some calls lately and have had limited, but notable success. I presently have a short barrel, POS Glenfield Model 25 with a Maglight mounted under the barrel and a 4X scope. I can see clearly out to about 80 yards and can hit targets and varmits with about 6" of bullet drop, dead quiet. Well, most of the time. I could care less if I miss and usually, the varmit won't move if I do. An autoloader woiuld be just the ticket.
I cut the stock forearm off square 90 degrees perpindicular with the barrel and sand it perfectly flat. Drill two holes in the end cap of a C cell Maglight so that the on/off button lines up where my left thumb wants to be in a shooting position and attach it to the flat surface with screws (epoxied in place for additional strength). Maglight still unscrews for battery changes. Mount a cheap 4X scope and load up with shorts or CB's.
I set up steel targets on the fences and around the grounds and start getting a feel for how much drop to allow for. It's fun as hell.
P.S. I CAN SEE ALL OF THE GROUND I SHOOT OVER AND WOULD NEVER ENCOURAGE ANYONE TO SHOOT EVEN SHORTS AROUND AT NIGHT UNLESS THEY WHERE SURE OF THEIR BACKDROP.
I have had a tube feeder that handled shorts well, but would make the flashlight difficult to mount. I have seen several cheap mag feed auto's and expect to buy a few and start experimenting with making shorts or CB longs or CB's feed reliably. I just figured somebody else has done this and could give me advise.
Also, I have made quite a few guns like this out of bolt guns and all my friends want one after their first nocturnal shooting gallery experience.
