Savage 219 Lock up Problems
« on: January 22, 2005, 05:18:26 PM »
Hello fellas

Posting this for a friend ....

Guys, I just got 2 more barrels for my Savage 219. One in 22 Hornet and the other a 16 ga.

The original is in 30-30 and does lock up tight but you really have to close the action hard, the two new barrels won't even lock. The barrel comes down to the receiver but when it makes contact with the locking bolt it gets really hard and won't lock the action. This is a hammerless break action and when you close the action it cocks the hammer.

Is the locking bolt on this break action screwed up or does it have something to do with the spring being to tight or a sear problem?

I've got a bag full of extra internal parts but I see no reason pulling everything out if it's just one thing. Thanks for any help.

Thanks!

(also, I am sending him a link to this post)

I am not super familiar with these but don't believe they were interchangeable barrels.  They had to be fitted at the factory.  I would check to see if the barrel  boss is completely closing onto the receiver walls.  They check if the locking notch on the barrel is going deep enough for the bolt to engage the slot.  There are several places that need fitting and there is a proper order for that to occur.  If your unsure the safest thing would be a trip to the gunsmith.

You were right about the interchangability of the barrells.  The particular model that he has originally came with two fitted barrells (.22 hornet and 30-30).

Here is a quote of one response that was provided ....

Quote
The 219 savage came with "fitted" interchangeable barrels...22 Hornet and 30-30 Win. The Shotgun barrels were from the 219B and 220 Savage. The 219B and 220 Savages were almost "Idential" . I can understand why you are having a problem with the 16 Ga barrel. This may explain why you are having lock up problems with your 22 Hornet. If it were fitted to a 219B or 220 Savage then you've got an expensive fit up problem. If the barrels were on a 219 they should be dimensionally the sameand you should check all the lock up parts for interference marks and or breakage. Also check the front receiver pin for wear. Replace any worn parts, stone the burrs were there is interference.

Thanks again!

I recently bought a 219 rechambered from 25/20 to 25/35 which came with an extra barrel in 20 gauge. Actually, the spare barrel wasn't for the 219 at all and is stamped Model 220 but it fits mine like a glove. I since have purchased an additional  Model 220 shotgun barrel in 410 and a Model 219 barrel in 30-30 and they all lock up fine and fire safely. Check the ejectors and see if they're bottoming when you close the action. This could be causing a problem also.
