Daylight is coming again!!!!!!
« on: January 22, 2005, 06:05:04 PM »
Man I love this time of year when we begin to get significant gains in daylight (3-5 min per day?)!  Yesterday was clear and sunny here in Dillingham and we had good light until 6 pm!!!  Sure glad those days of dark at 4:45 are gone for another year.  Official daylight was about 7 hours but a clear bright sky adds a lot of usable daylight.  You'd think as a life long Alaskan I wouldn't mind but the older I get the more I feel those dark days.  The next couple months it will just get better and better.  Time to think about trying for a winter caribou if the weather will stay cold and the rivers finally freeze enough for travel.

Lucky!  Yea I am loving it too but the flu has me this weekend or I'd be out looking for bait locations.

You boys up there are a lot stronger than me. I just can not imagine the day without light and a decent temperature.
I can feel the pressure of what we talk about as cabin fever and you folks experience to the 10th power.
My hat is off to ya.
Blessings

I have hunted Alaska and plan on going back. But I don't know if I could handle the dark for that long. I guess I am spoiled, you guys are tougher that me.   :D

Dave keep up the fluid intake and hope you heal soon.  Sorry to hear the bug bit ya.  At least more light is coming.

Dabig - During the pipline, we had friends in Prudhoe that were so excited to see the sun in late Jan that they called us in Fairbanks just to talk about it.  Never been that far north but all who have been ther say its rugged duty.  Sure glad the folks at Kaktovik are getting fixed up with no tragedies - close call there.

Speaking of Soldotna, I guess the board of fish is hammering out some commercial vs sport fishing issues this week in Anchorage.  Hope a reasonable compromise can be worked out for everybody.  Those issues never seem to go away.

Hey BigMoose:
Did I read that right? 20 below and 70MPH wind? Do you fellas understand that people down here can't possibly relate to what you're talking about?
Some city in N.C. got shut down because of an inch of snow. We got 4 degrees and 4 inches in southwestern Pa., and the news media people were giving out the "Impending Doom Scenario". You guys would laugh yourselves silly to hear the stern advice given to "prevent serious consequences from over exposure to such bitter cold"!  What you're talking about is something else entirely! What the heck do you wear in such conditions to stay alive? A house maybe?
And then, perhaps you've had the experience of trying to help someone who just didn't know.
 Get better soon, Dave.

I am fine. Just working around the place.  Might reduce my number of sick days to 48 tomorrow just for mental health reasons.

Got to get the place ready for my guest form Iraq. :D

I have one making actual flight reservations for a confirmed date.

There is the possibility of one other Vietnam vet.

As I talked to my guests wife last night she was still in bewilderment as to what was happening.  I have also had three offers to help with the funding of my guest.

I am going to keep track of everything and write the story when we are done.  Recording the trip on film is also going to happen. This is going to be fun!

Dave, sick leave
« Reply #10 on: January 24, 2005, 10:54:17 PM »
Dave, your comment about using sick days reminded me.
A former co worker of my wife used to take a day off now and then because he felt "too good to go to work".  He called them "well days".

I must have missed something about this Iraq visitor.  Maybe a previous post?  I'll go look.  You're a mighty generous man Dave.
