6mm\TCU vs. 6mm Bullberry
« on: January 23, 2005, 09:55:23 AM »
Guys, I need some information regarding real world velocities and effectiveness on medium sized whitetails. Anybody using this round? I am thinking either this or the 6mm\TCU in 20" barrel. Any thoughts, pro or con welcomed.

thanks, Bill

Grandson killed two small SW Mo whitetails this year with my carbine.  80 gr Sierra single shot pistol bullet at chronoed 3100 fps.  Really did a number on the two.  Both were over 250 yds and both shoulders were ruined.  Next year will try different bullets.

Neil, I'd say that's pretty good performance outta the Bullberry! Congrats to your grandson. Regarding wanting to try different bullets...did the SSP fragment too well for your liking? I know they shoot well from my 12" 6mm\TCU. Could you provide me a little more info on your rifle setup?
Looks to be a Contender, stainless, about 20" in length. Fred doesn't do barrel fluting by chance does he?
Steve, I've had your site in favorites for a long time, Thanks for the access to your extensive databases. I could not however find any info on the Bullberry round. I know it is essentially a necked down .30-30. I finally revisited Fred's site and found some ballistic info that I didn't remember being there.

Guys, again, thank you for the info.

bg - I shoot a 6mm 30-30 AI which is very similar to the 6mm BB and with bullets >80 gr. it is a real shooter.  3200 fps is safely do- able. If you check out 'loading data' on the Bullberry website Fred did alot of load workups for his 6mm BB. All of which worked quite well in my AI.

i can get 2700fps with 80gr sierra ssp's outta my 14" 6tcu. the 6mm 80gr sierra single shot bullets are excellent bullets, but they are designed for handgun velocities. 2600fps is what they are designed for on the top end. they should be soft at velocities above that.

a harder bullet may be more desirable in the carbine length barrels. the 85gr hpbt may work well.

shamefully, sierra is discontinuing the great single shot bullets :(

Nope...No Bullberry, Dingleberry or any other kind of berry loads.  Why?  Because I am not a T/C fan, nor are any of the shooters I associate with.

But...for the 6mm Bullberry:
MAX. CASE LENGTH: 2.0395
TRIM TO LENGTH: 2.0295
BRASS: Winchester .30-30
PRIMER: Winchester Large Rifle

And for the 6mm Bullberry Improved:
MAX. CASE LENGTH: 1.910
TRIM TO LENGTH: 1.900
BRASS: Winchester .30-30
PRIMER: Winchester Large Rifle

The barrel started out as a 22 inch blue Virgin Valley in 6/223.  Metaloy coated the barrel and OTT rechambered to 6/30-30.  It is a real accurate barrel.  The bullets did fragment too well for both deer were shoulder shot and both shoulders were lost on each deer.  I'm real proud of the Grandson.  They were very small deer but sure did make good jerky.  The Carbine is a G-2

6mm tcu

Bill Down here in Aus I use a 6mm tcu built on a Mohawk with a 21 inch tube for shoot Wallaby and I have also taken 2 fallow deer with it. By the look of the photo's a fallow would be half as big again as a whitetail and the 6mm handled them easily. I use locally made bullits now but one of the deer was taken with a win 80gr bullet. One of my mates had a 6tcu and he had good kills on deer with 85 partitions we have not used single shot pistol bullets because at rifle speeds they could possibly destroy too much meat.
