22 Sportster with CB's or Shorts?????

Hi Gang,

I just picked up a new 22 single shot sporster model.  Was wondering if anyone here had any experience with shooting CB's or Shorts in it.  I'm trying to find a load that is not too loud and won't disturb the neighbors while at the same time providing a little bit of close range fun shooting at paper targets.

i shot many boxes of 22 shorts through my 22 rim fire sportster with iron sights at a big tin can i hung from tree in my back yard from my living room. it was 50 yards away, they were nice and quiet.

the shorts shot as good as i could shoot them, i usually hit the can, i also tossed in a few boxes of wildcats made by winchester, the ones that cost $12 a brick.

The Super Colibri's are REAL quiet, but they drop off quick; not much left after about 25 or 30 yards. At that distance you can see them in your scope as they drop. I shoot them indoors once in a while; they make less noise than my air rifle. The CB Longs aren't bad, but they are a little louder. Not nearly as much as a regular 22, but they still "pop". In a suburban area, I would go with the air rifle if I planned on doing much shooting. Here in Phoenix it's okay to use one as long as there's an adult present; firearms of any sort are considered illegal. If they're okay to use where you are, try the Super Colibris and the CB's and see if you like them. I believe both the CB long & short versions have the same velocity.

Another long dead post resurrection, this.
Just tried some new to me CCI 'Quiet 22's in my Sportster barrel, they chronoed at an average about 724fps (hign 749 / low 700) for 5 shots. BTW, The first shot from a cold barrel wasnt the highest or lowest velo.
They are rated at 710fps and have a lead RN 40gr. bullet in a LR length case (filling the chamber should help ). A heavy bullet CB, if you will.

Mine dont shoot them too well... BUT I have a old Springfield 84 and a newer CZ 452 that will! AND with the long barrels they are REALLY quiet!  ::) ;)

I hope to do an accuracy test today at 25 and 50yds. At what range did you test CW and not get good groups from the Sportster? I was thinking of using my Martini MkIII c/w 20X to really see what the ammo can do  ;) , but that certainly wont tell me what the Sportster can do with them  :P

50' and 25 yards. 50yards is futile IMHO. 

I had a Contender with a Match 22LR barrel that shoot the LONGS in one hole at 25 yards...

My Springfield 84C is 30-40 years old, has a clip feed and a 25" barrel and open sites. It shoots great too! It has shot more critters around my homes thru the years its amazing... Mostly Woodchucks in the garden or coons in the garbage cans, but possums, a couple coyotes and some pesky critters I will not mention in text...  ::)

Does make me wonder if the velo for the 40gr. bullet is too slow to stabilize for 50yd in the std 1:16 twist. Still, the 40 for 25-30ish should be superior penetration for varmints over the 29er. I rather doubt that hollow pointing the bullet would help for hunting; I think just flat nosing it with something like the Paco Kelly tool would give better impacting energy transfer.

While I agree the 40's would be better.. the CB's are 29 grs..

BUT CCI now offers a 40G "lite" its going 725fps... I bought a couple boxes, but haven't tried them...yet. ;)

I have shot the CB's at longer ranges and the hold over is amusing... I also discovered its not a good idea to shoot frozen trees with them... as the bullets bounce off!! LOL

The tree may may be dangerous even when not frozen, me and a half dozen other shooters were standin next to a fella at a summer shoot that dry balled his .54 Lyman GPR caplock, he removed the nipple and sifted a few grains of 4f into the fire channel and replaced the nipple, capped and fired at the base of a maple tree 10yds away, the ball came right back at him and smacked him in the possibles bag hard enough to have sent him or anyone to the hospital if it hit someone's hide!!  :o He got to wear the jawbone around his neck for the rest of the weekend.  ;D Those light loads can be dangerous sometimes, but so can others if things just go wrong.  :-\

CW, I dont see CCI 'lite' anywhere on their site, and that 40gr @ 725 sounds awfully close to the 'CCI Quiet 22' rated at 710 that I posted about (so, Im  ??? ).

Like guncrank1 mentioned waaay upthread, this is a subject that was discussed in an old thread. I'd like to pass on some info that I passed on in the original thread about the Colibri in my Sportster.

It was actually my son (10 at the time) who was shooting cans at about 20-25 yds. The rounds were so quiet that we could only hear the hammer coming down, and the 'tink' as the bullet hit the can. After shooting for awhile, and hitting every can, he fired another shot and we heard the hammer hit, but not hear the 'tink' nor see the dust behind the can. He ejected the empty case, and put in another to shoot again. I stopped him and checked the barrel. Sure enough one of those teeny bullets was about 2/3 of the way, stuck down barrel. Poked it out with a cleaning rod and ran some bore cleaner and a few patches through. Dirty, dirty, dirty... We kept shooting after that, but cleaned the bore after finishing of each box of fifty Colibris.

Something to keep in mind - we had no problem with stuck rounds with a Ruger Single Six or a youth Henry with 18" barrel, just the Sportster's 20 incher.

In any case the Sportster is a lot of fun whatever we shoot in it.  ;D

Excellent point!!

 I have tried them and in my long barrels they will not exit... As A rule i dont buy them because of this and the remainder of what I have will be fired thru a handgun...  CB's either CCI or Remington are a better bullet in my book....

I shoot CCI CBs through my Remington Pump.  Great for Rats and Red Squirrels.  They are so quite the only thing I hear is the firing pin strike and the bullet hitting the target.  I'm hard of hearing, but I don't hear a pop when the gun goes off.  The firing pin strike and the bullet strike are louder.

I've taken my versa long rifle barrel and sighted it in for cb's.  It stays by the back door for furry varmints.  My 17 and 22 mag. are ready to hunt with more potent stuff.
 
The cb's will drop a tree rat at 40 -50 feet no problem if you head shoot them, and they will group about an inch at that distance.  Long rifles shot same hole in this gun, so accuracy obviously is not as good, but it's good enough!
 
I've shot a bunch of times, and never heard a neighbor that knew of it or noticed it.
