Need new bolt for large ring mauser in 7.62x39?
« on: January 24, 2005, 03:55:09 AM »
I am putting together a K98 large ring mauser action (8x57) rebarreled to 7.62x39. I have the magazine spacer and spring/follower to adapt the magazine and feeder assembly to the new caliber. The K98 bolt extractor catches on about half the base of the 7.62x39 case. Is this enough, or do I need a new bolt or bolt parts to adapt to the smaller-diameter 7.62x39 case?

You'll jave a devil of a time finding a mauser bolt with a face opening for the Russian short.  It should work OK.  I've seen this conversion several times and it was fairly reliable.  If you wish to make the fit better the boltface will have to be reduced, either with a spacer or by welding.  Either is a pain and mostly likely unneeded.

The 7.62x39 is the SKS/AK round, called the Russian short it's the little brother of the 7.62x54.  Opening a mauser to a rimmed cartridge is really fairly simple while making it smaller is a bit more tricky.  The bolt face is opened(usually by grinding) to fit the case and the extractor is cut to fit.  Mauser even altered the M98 to handle a 12 guage shotgun,(even a functional magazine).  There's no bolt face surround left in the shotgun conversion but they work.. Might make an interesting shotgun with a rifled barrel.  A scope mounted and stock it as an express rifle..  Would make an impressive stopping rifle and would be legal in most shotgun only states.
