Alright, I need some opinions. I have my 24" .30-06 bbl on my Encore right now. I have a BSA scope on it that has served me well, but I had decided it might be time to kick up the quality to a Leupold, Nikon, Weaver or Bushnell. But lately Ive been kinda looking at getting back to basics, meaning iron sites. Since New Hampshire isnt known for vast expanses of open field/plain most of the hunting is up close and personal and can get kinda tight. Thats why I had been looking into 2-7x scopes. But since my new trend to iron sites Ive been thinking of aperture sights, specifically the Williams Foolproof. Now, Im very iffy about Williams right now. I did not have a good experience with their firesites. An aluminum base with a set screw just spelled bad news. But the Foolproofs look like a better put together site. So here is the quandry, do I still go with the scope, or the Foolproof aperture site?

If you decide to go with the scope-Nikon's shotgun scope in 2-7x is nice and compact-I have one on my 209x50 Encore. JMHO

NH, at 25 years old you'll do fine with iron sights but another 10 years and you'll be begging for optics on ALL your rifles. As for scopes the Nikon Prostaffs and Buckmasters are good values. One of the best scopes out now is the Bushnell 3200 series. Very good optics and the rainguard lense coating is great.

I am perfectly satisfied with the quality of Bushnell and Nikon... but Leuopolds shine when it comes to eye releif which is why I went with them.

If you're anticipating such close ranges, you might consider ghost rings.

Well, Ive had my mind made up for me the other day. Its going to be the scope. I found out my friend owns a camper trailer. We are now working out the plans of renting a campsite in the White Mountains (in Dolly Copp) and dropping it off there to stay so we can come up on weekends to hunt. My friend has hunted there off and on all his life and he says they do selective timber cuts (as part of the management program) every year. Some of these cuts, Im told, can be as much as 300 yards or more. He says his son killed a deer on one of these cuts a couple years ago at a paced off 186 yards. So I guess Im gonna have to find me a 200 yard range to practice on!

The older I get the better I like scopes. If you do scope it the 2 x 7X Leupold would be great. I have one on a .17AH and have taken alot of small varmints with it. The longest shot to date is a skunk at 285 yrds., lazered. I`m a Leupold fan and have over 30 of their scope. I bought my first Leupold in 1968 and have been adding them ever since. I hear they have great service, but I have never used it.
