I am considering a new encore pistol, my range is no more than 100 yards. I am used to hunting with a slug gun, meaning devastating knockdown power. What caliber would you guys recommend?

Since you are going with the Encore, I would suggest you get something that you can't get in the Contender, like a 454 Casull. I prefer the Contender for handgun hunting because it is a lighter gun, easier for me to carry. In it you can get a 44 Mag or 45/70. In a 14" tube, both of those would be sufficient beyond 100 yds.

A lot of folks really seem to like the 7mm-08 in the 15" Encore, which should still be effective past 100 yards. If you're looking for pure knockdown power, the 44 Mag, 454 Casull, 480 Ruger, etc. should really get the job done. Are you limited in the choice of cartridges in your state (are there any regualtions regarding the use of certain pistol cartridges?)?

I'm here in Iowa with a restriction on lugs or muzzleloaders only or a straight-walled pistol cartridge. I went with the .454 Casull and wouldn't change it for anything, I get wonderful 100 yd accuracy with certain loads and a Leupold 4x scope, if you go with this and want some load data, I'd being willing to share, but not on the board, it's not published data, but I'm not pushing the envelope either.
