:grin: i just traded for a taurus M44ss x 6" and will be casting lee 240 gr. lswc tumble lube and plan to use alliant #2 to push it. my question is do any of you have a favorite load that would give me about 900 fps for target & bunny's.

My buddy shoots the same bullet and found that 6.8 of Unique is quiet accurate, though it runs a bit slower, around 800 f/s if memory serves me right.  In addition, 6.8 of Unique and a 255 grain 45 Colt bullet is also a good load, what I use in my Trapper and Black Hawk for plinking and turkey.

:-) good info, i was tyring to find a do it all powder for 44 spec. and 44 mag. utility loads small game and target mostly. my lee 2nd edition, had a load with #2 for both and therefore my question.
    however; after posting last night i read back in the previous post and found lots of info for unique powder and all the shops in my area stock it for about $18.00 a pound. so approx. 7000 grains per pound divide by 7.0 grains = 1000 rounds - 10% spillage and thats still 900 loads per lb.
   well mr. castaway that sounds like cheap shooten to me.

Try this one. I use a 240 grain cast truncated cone over 8 grains of SR4756 and a CCI 350 primer....I get about 750FPS, no recoil at all....very accurate and plenty to do in a bunny or squirrel with no damage to the meat.

:-) thanks tony 212, i picked up some unique today $16.95 less 5% for cash and 200 cci 300 primers. so it looks like i'll be giving this a try. i'am going to try 6.0 in 44 spec. and 8.0 to start in 44 mag. and work from there.
   i've been shooting pmc 240 lswcc and really enjoy them so my goal is to try to find a load that is simular. my mold and more lube should be here by ups tomorrow, so it looks like i'll be casting sat. this morning -19 tomorrow -20 to -24 the wood stove in my shed won't even start at that temp. forecast for sat. is 20 to 24 above and should be able to get the shed to 50 or so. i'll keep you up to date on my progress.

Charlie:  According to my notes you are right on it. My .44 spl w/ 6.0 gr unique chronos 650 fps from my Charter bulldog and shoots neat lttle clusters at 50 ft.  yea ft .. W/ this gun I need no more accuracy nor recoil. My  Ruger SBH as well as my contender like 8 gr of unique w/ soft bullets (my notes show that speer swaged were better than my cast)  would have to lookup the velocity for the ruger but the 10" contender shows 900fps. Moving up to the oft recommended 10.0 gr of unique requires a harder (cast, no G.C.) bullet in both of my 44 mags.  Again I may not have recorded the Ruger velocity but for some reason leading was a prob in that piece. The contender showed a 1195fps avg.  and a touch of lead that brushed right out.... Good luck and be careful.... Marty

That's not cheap shootin... get a 6lb jug of #102 from Jeff Bartlett for $54, pay the $20 hazmat fee and still only end up with $12 and change per lb.  His #102 is an AA#2 Improved equivalent.  I load it for 357 and 45LC plinkin loads all the time.
Better yet, go in with some shooting buddies, order multiple jugs and split the fee... cheaper still.

thanks haywire for the info. i'am just getting back into handgun after many years, so i'll start with 1 lb. jugs. aa#2 did sound good and i'll give it a try some day. for now i'am starting with good old unique.
     my dies and mold came today, and i cast 150 good out of 200 first time with this new lee mold its a tumble lube .430 x 240gr. the 50 that that i rejected had flashing problems ( me ) i checked the weight of all 150 and they ranged from 239.9 to 241.7. this will work for me.
     my lee carbide deluxe set came with a little dipper. having seen questions about these on the forum i tried it 50 times checking with my pact electronic scale and found that it varied from 5.5 to 6.1 grains using unique as test powder.
     tomorrow my bullets will be dry and i'll load some 44 spec. and see how they fly.
