Feral Cat
« on: January 26, 2005, 02:02:32 PM »
Finally got the pesky feral cat that has been raiding my garbage. This guy was just starting to get smart too...

With 3 shots launched at him with my new 223, the cat learned that somthing was wrong and made sure his moves were more stealthy while I stocked him. Those three shots ranged from 150-250y with that 223. Suppose I need to get it a little bit more precision sighted in, huh?

Well today, before a quick run into town, I took an armless walk into the field in which this cat hunts his varmints....mice. Spotting the feral out there about 250y, I quickly ran into the house and grabbed the trusty 25-06 and some hot reloads. Stealthily sneeking into position, I got within 200y of him and layed my sorry butt prone in the cold, snowy field. As he was quartering away from me, I placed the crosshairs on him knowing that any hit with the quarter-bore cannon would smash him. Let the trigger loose and a nice red mist occurred, taking the feral right off his feet  No more garbage raiding now

Kinda ticks me off that the 223 would not hit him as I just sighted it in 2 weeks ago. I'll have to check for loose scope rings perhaps...

Good Shootin'

Well you know what they say Hildy..."Use enough gun".  :)

You wouldn't want to wing him and have a stroppy feline bearing down on you.  :-D

One feral cat is all you had. Consider yourself lucky. I got about 13 or 14 feral cats that hang around. and one just had another litter in my barn. Which brings the count up to 18. They are such a pain because they eat   birds and been tryin to get at my squirrels. That however is about to change. Just bought new rifle in 22-250 and there are going to be a few less cat around here.  take care and god bless.

lol, enough gun alright.....I'm not as bad as my one buddy though who thinks a 270 is the least amount of gun for groundhogs. As a matter of fact, his 300 Win Mag is "perfect" for him

hoghunter, you need to invite me over. I would love to put more blood on my 25 or even the 223  But trust me, those cats have always been around, its just that this one has been buggin me lately.

I usually set a catch em alive trap, as it works 24 X 7 X 365.  Cats are easy to catch.........but you'll probably need a shotgun when you release them......

We had a problem at our barn in New Mexico with cats.  A young girl brought all the kittens out and turned them loose at the stables.  The young lady said they were there for mousing.  I talked to the owner, reminded him that the snakes took care of the mice, we did not have a problem and did not need a bunch of cats.  Barr the owner said that he did not see any problem with the cats, it would be OK to leave them there.  Six months later they had gone totally wild.  I started missing some laying hens that I kept at my barn.  I brought it up to Barr, he said "cats don't kill chickens".  Then two weeks later old Barr caught me at the barn one evening.  He pulled me aside and said "those cats killed my rooster, we need to do something about them".  "But we got to be quite about it so no one knows".  "Rog, can you take care of this quietly".  I told him I could.  I took my .22 Remington pump, with a 3X9 scope on it and left it in my barn.  I also had a box of .22CB caps.  As the days went by when no one was there, or were busy with a noisy job, I would carefully take a shot 15 to 20 yards, right behind the ear.  The CB caps were so quite no one heard the shots.  In a week no more cats.  When the young lady realised the cats were missing she looked up Barr and asked "what could have happened to the cats"?  Old Barrs reply was "coyotes must have got them"!  And they did, every last one of them.

A 'Veteran' -- whether active duty, discharged, retired, or reserve -- is someone who, at one point in his life, wrote a blank check made payable to 'The United States of America,' for an amount of 'up to, and including his life.' Our neighbor keeps getting new cats, and they keep disapearing. Weird? Maybe they should keep them inside.

there is 2 of them POS in my house.  they are real tame and i bet that i could get get with shot gun range.  this morning i made some killer buns for work and i left them on the counter and i ate my breakfast in the other room, came in to the kitchewn and one was eating my bun.  i fliped because they have been pissing me off real good the last bit.  i through my nicely made bun at the guilty cake from about 10 feet away.  i must be good or lucky because it hit the cat right on top of the cat.  i guess i need a 25-06.
Let the heavens decide.

Hildy, which part of PA are you in? I'm up in the Northeast. Only thing we got up here is the occasional yote and foxes and etc.  :D

I am from central Pennsylvania. If you are familar with where Wilkes-Barre is, I am about 70 miles west of there. Danville is the town I am closest to although I live out in the country.

Wowsers. You and me are a ways apart. Danville is a heck of a drive from here  . We got some ferals up this way. But most of the time they're migratory and actually move from one place to another (unless ya feed them good  ).  :D

Yea...I usually see maybe one a year around my place. This year's second cat was trotting around in my field today though....

I grabbed the 223 and went up to check things out when the feline took off into the thick brush. If it was here once, it will be here again

I think these cats evolved from some of the local farmers barn cats since I live in an agricultural area. Not really sure if that could be possible, but one thing I do know that they live/nest close by to my house. Thier build is slightly larger than your average house cat and they seem to have a gray/black/brown striped/blotched body.

If you are that close to Williamsport....you must have HAD to have gone to the Gander Mt. located right next to the Lycoming mall. Its not bad but I prefer a local gun shop for my reloading supplies and ammo. I purchased one firearm from them (223) and they gave me a pretty good deal at about $10.00 less than anybody else. :D

There's a bunch of old sheds and chicken houses on the neighbor's property behind us.  He told me that he had too many cats around there and needed to have a "cat killin'" when his wife wasn't around so she wouldn't hear him shoot.  I told him that I had a pellet rifle that was fairly quiet and could start thinning them out from my side of the fence.  He said to have at 'em.

I've got a Beeman R-10 .20cal air rifle, so I started leaving it by the back door and started easing out in the yard when I saw one of those feral cats.  Found that I could reliably kill one with a head shot or a shot through the ribs at around 25 to 30 yards.  They'll fall but run a lot farther with rib shots at longer ranges.  The heavier, round nosed or pointed pellets kill cats MUCH better than the flat nosed or hollow pointed pellets.  So far, I've gotten nine of them.
